First Subway Series of 2010 Goes in Favor of Mets

The first Subway Series of 2010 is in the books. The location was Citi Field. The series started off great for the Yankees as they took the Friday game by a 2-1 score. It was a close battle going into the 7th before the Yankees struck on a 2-run double from Kevin Russo. The Mets scored their lone run of the contest in the Bottom of the 9th on a Jason Bay RBI Double. Vasquez took the win for the Yanks and Rivera got the save as Dessens took the loss for the Mets. Due to the physical problems the Mets starting rotation has been having as of late, Takahashi got a start and went 6 solid innings for the Mets, this coming from a guy who usually works out of the bullpen. The reason for Takahashi getting the start Friday, and also RA Dickey getting a start earlier this week is due to the fact the John Maine is now on the DL and Oliver Perez has been moved into the bullpen (THANK GOD). so aside from Johan Santana and Mike Pelfrey, the Mets rotation is kinda messed up.

Speaking of Mike Pelfrey, he threw a gem in the Saturday game of the series, helping lead the Mets to a 5-3 victory. Mets got on the board first in the 1st thanks to RBI singles from Wright and Pagan. Wright then drove in another run in the 3rd to give the Mets the 3-0 lead. The Yanks finally got on the board in the 6th with an RBI infield single from Fransisco Cervelli. The Mets went on to add on two more runs thanks to an RBI Double from Alex Cora in the 6th and then another RBI Double from Angel Pagan in the 7th to give the Mets a 5-1 lead. Yankees got the bases loaded in the 8th and scored twice of a walk to Kevin Russo and a fielders choice hit by Derek Jeter to cut the lead to 5-3. But K-Rod came out of the pen and was able to get a 5 out save for the Mets and hold the win. Despite having struggled for the most part this season, David Wright showed a little bit of his old self Saturday night. The big problem for Wright this season has been the strike outs. They are up for David this year as he is 3rd in the National League in strike outs. Some in the media believe that the 98 MPH fastball Wright took in the head against the Giants at Citi Field last August my have something to do with his struggles this year but who knows.

Now on to the Sunday night game which featured an awesome pitching matchup between C.C. Sabathia for the Yankees and Johan Santana for the Mets. Mets took the rubber match and the series thanks to the 6-4 win last night. The Mets got on the board first in the 2nd inning thanks to a 2-Run Single by Alex Cora. Then in the same inning, on the very next batter, Jason Bay steps up and hammers a 2-Run Blast that traveled 399 feet to give the Mets a 4-0 lead. Bay stepped up again in the 5th and crushed a solo homer to right field that went about 396 feet to give the mets a 5-0 lead. The Mets scoring was capped off in the 5th when David Wright drilled an RBI Double to give the Mets a 6-0 lead. At that point it looked like the Mets had it on cruise control. Santana went 7 and 2/3 striking out 5. The only blemish against Santana came in the 7th when Cervelli knocked in Swisher with an RBI single. Then the Mets shut the door in the 8th and headed into the top of the 9th leading 6-1. Igarashi started the inning on the mound for the mets but got ROCKED. got 1 out and then gives up an RBI Single to Miranda, an RBI Double to Jeter, and an RBI ground out to Gardner. Then K-Rod comes in, gets the 2nd out, loads up the bases, adn ends the game by striking out A-Rod on a full count fastball.

This may have been one of the most entertaning series between these two teams in a good long while. All games were close and they were all decided by 2 runs or less. Now the big question going forward is, what direction are both teams going to go from here? The Mets get today off and start a 3 game series tomorrow at home against division hated foe the Phillies. Meanwhile the Yanks also have today off and start a 3 game series tomorrow against the Twins on the Road. So now we will all wait and see what happens heading into the rematch between these two teams at Yankee Staduim next month
