Oswego State Women's Hockey Season Ends With a Double-Overtime Loss to Neumann College
There is an old saying that goes all good things must come to an end. This past weekend a good thing ended as the Oswego State Women's Hockey Season is over after a crushing double overtime loss to Neumann College in the first round of the ECAC West playoffs. The story is courtesy of the Oswego State Sports Information Department:
Neumann's Mariah Fairgrieve scored the game-winning goal with three seconds remaining on a power play in the second overtime, as the Oswego State women's ice hockey team fell 2-1 in the ECAC West Play-In game Saturday afternoon in Aston, Pa. The Lakers tied the game early in the second period, as neither team ended the stalemate before the end of regulation. Oswego State completed its best season in program history finishing the season with a record of 13-10-3, while Neumann (16-6-4) will face Plattsburgh in the ECAC Semifinal round.
Jessica Schroeder tallied the game's first goal midway through the first period 29 seconds into a Laker power play after received a feed from Jennie Greenlee to put the Knights ahead 1-0.
Kelly Collins lit the lamp 3:29 into the second period when Oswego State took advantage of a Neumann unsportsmanlike conduct infraction. Collins got a pass from Jillian Bergeron and Carly Henderson for her 13th goal of the season to make the score 1-1 at the end of two frames. The Knights had four power-play chances during the stanza, but the Laker penalty kill unit prevented Neumann from converting any of those opportunities.
After a scoreless and penalty-free third period, the contest went into overtime. However, one extra frame was not enough as the game went into a second overtime frame. Fairgrieve received a pass from Schroeder to end the Laker season 13:18 into the second overtime.
Oswego State goaltender Emi Williams completed her stellar collegiate career with a 35 saves, while Knight goalie Shannon Donnelly registered 23 saves.
Oswego State has nothing to be ashamed of at all, putting up very impressive numbers during the course of the season. Stay tuned to the blog for a season recap coming up next.
