The biggest weekend home series of the year for the Oswego State Men's Hockey team has come and gone, and what a weekend it was for the Green and Gold. Before the boys had the big matchup against arch rival Plattsburgh, they had one other game to play first and that was a Friday night affair against the Potsdam Bears.
Oswego dominated the game from start to finish and came away with a big 7-1 win over the Bears. Oswego started off with three goals in the opening period. First, at the 2:12 mark, Matt Galati scored his 7th of the season. Then the powerplay for the Lakers would strike twice in the period, both goals coming from the same guy. First at 5:52 of the period, Shawn Hulshof scored his 3rd of the season. Then Hulshof scored again, another powerplay goal, his 4th goal of the year, to give Oswego a 3-0 lead at the 13:20 mark. So Oswego headed into the break up 3-0.
Potsdam would score their only goal of the game in the 2nd period, when at the 7:12 mark, when Mike Arnold scored his 7th of the season. Oswego would run away with the game after that. Stephen Johnson scored his first career goal at the 10:50 mark to restore the three goal lead. Oswego would connect again on the powerplay in the period, as Dylan Smith scored his 3rd goal of the season at the 19:23 mark. That gave Oswego a 5-1 lead after 2 periods. Oswego would score two more goals in the 3rd period, Alex Botten on the powerplay, and David Titanic short handed, to seal the 7-1 Oswego victory.
Austin Keiser took the loss for Potsdam, dropping his record to 1-4-0, making 35 saves but allowing 6 goals. Shane Talarico finished up the game, giving up just 1 goal and making 13 saves. Matt Zawadzki got the win for Oswego, improving his record to 3-0-0 on the year, as he made 26 saves and allowed just the one goal. Oswego went 4 for 10 on the powerplay. A few Lakers had good nights on offense, such as Bobby Gertsakis (3A), Shawn Hulshor (2G), Mike Montagna (3A), Kenny Neil (2A) and Dylan Smith (1G 1A).
After Oswego dispatched of the Bears, the biggest rivalry in Division III Ice Hockey came to center stage as the Lakers played host to the #1 ranked Plattsburgh Cardinals. These teams went at it all night long in an intense battle, ending in a hard fought 3-3 tie.
Before a sellout crowd of 3,000 people inside the Campus Center, the fans were treated to a goaltending clinic in the opening period, which ended scoreless. Oswego would break the tie early in the 2nd, when at the 3:45 mark of the 2nd period David Titanic scored his 2nd goal of the season, and 2nd in as many nights. Plattsburgh would respond at the 5:21 mark, when Rich Botting scored his 1st of the year, a powerplay goal, to tie the game. Oswego would take the lead back at the 16:11 mark, when Shawn Hulshof scored his 5th of the season, and 3rd in two games, to give the Lakers the 2-1 lead. That would hold up through the end of the period. To the 3rd period we go, and Plattsburgh would get the score even just 1:38 into the period, when Alex Jensen scored his 4th of the year, a powerplay goal, to pull the Cardinals even. Plattsburgh would jump out to a 3-2 lead at the 5:18 mark, when Kyle Hall scored his 2nd of the year. The Cardinals lead would not last, as Mike Wills scored his 1st goal of the year at the 6:56 mark to tie the score at 3. Nobody would score during the remainder of regulation or overtime, ending the game in a 3-3 tie.
Mathieu Cadieux earned the tie for Plattsburgh, moving his record to 9-0-2 on the year, making 28 saves in the tie. Matt Zawadzki earned the tie for Oswego, moving his record to 3-0-1 on the year, making 35 saves in the tie.
With that Oswego has closed out the first half of the regular season, and the 2013 portion of their schedule. The next time the Lakers hit the ice will be January 7th and 8th for the Pathfinder Bank Oswego Hockey Classic!
