The 2013 portion of the schedule has come and gone for the Oswego State Men's Hockey team. Right now, at the unoffical halfway point of the season, the boys sit at 5-2-1, which puts them at #12 in the nation in the latest coaches polls. Not exactly a blazing start to the year, but still a very good one never the less. With a whole cast of new characters in the lineup for the Lakers, it took a little time for the team to get adjusted to playing with each other. With all of that thrown in, the team has still had some pretty exciting games played through the first half of the season.
Oswego kicked the year off with a two game homestand against Buffalo State and Fredonia. First up was Fredonia and a heartbreaking 3-2 loss in Overtime. Shawn Hulshof and Brandon Adams scored their first career goals in the loss. Oswego followed that up with their first win of the season, a 3-2 victory over Buffalo State, a game in which Dylan Smith, Alex Botten and Matt Galati each scored their first career goals in the win. Oswego kept that momentum going, with two more wins after the Buffalo State game. Next was the 1st road game of the year, a 4-1 win in Cortland against the Red Dragons. Matt Galati and Alex Botten each had two point nights. The followed that up with a dominating 7-3 win over Elmira at home on November 16th. That night, Kenny Neil (1G 2A), Matt Galati (2G), Morgan Bonner (2A), Evan Schultz (2A), Nick Rivait (2A) and Shawn Hulshof (1G 1A) each had multi-point games.
Oswego headed into the first weekend road trip of the season, but were quickly brought back down to earth. Oswego was pounded 7-4 in a rough game against the Ice Knights in Geneseo. Chris Waterstreet, Brandon Adams, Andrew Barton and Mike Montagna scored the goals for Oswego in the loss. The Lakers rebounded quite nicely the next night in Brockport against the Soaring Eagles, to the tune of a 4-0 victory. Dylan Smith, Matt Galati with a pair, and Chris Raguseo each scored for Oswego, while Matt Zawadzki made 26 saves for his first career shutout.
Oswego closed out the first half of the season with the annual whiteout weekend, with the Potsdam Bears and Plattsburgh Cardinals coming to town. First up was a statement game, a 7-1 win over Potsdam. Dylan Smith (1G 1A), Mike Montagna (4A), Alex Botten (1G 1A), Shawn Hulshof (2G) and Bobby Gertsakis (3A) each had multiple point games. The last game of the season was the big one, Oswego vs. Plattsburgh. As has been the case in the past, this one lived up to all the hype, and became another classic game between the two schools. It went back and forth all night, culminating in a 3-3 tie. Oswego got goals from David Titanic, Shawn Hultsof, and the first career goal for Mike Willis to tie the game. So the final record for Oswego for the 2013 portion of the year stands at 5-2-1.
Oswego has split the goaltending duties through the first eight games between Justin Gilbert and Matt Zawadzki. Gilberts record stands at 2-2-0 with a 3.21 GAA and a .885 SV%. Meanwhile Zawadzki has a 3-0-1 record with a 1.59 GAA and a .942 SV% with one shutout. The scoring for the team has been pretty balanced this season, as Matt Galati leads the team with 7 goals and 10 points, while Kenny Neil, Mike Montagna and Bobby Gertsakis are tied for the team lead in assists with 6 each. Scoring this season has been distributed pretty evenly amongst the players this season.
The 2nd half of the year is going to be a very entertaining one for Oswego. The 2nd half of the year kicks off the first weekend in January with the pathfinder bank Oswego Hockey Classic, as the Lakers play host to Curry, Utica and Wisconsin Stevens Point. Then its home to Conn. College on Tuesday January 7th. After that its a two game road trip to Nazareth and Utica. January 14th brings about another tueswday night home game, this time against Salve Regina. The following weekend its home against Nazareth and on the road in Elmira. Oswego closes out January with road games against Fredonia and Buffalo State. Then Super Bowl weekend its home to Cortland, before going on the road for a pair of games in Morrisville against the Mustangs. Senior weekend comes on February 14th and 15th when Brockport and Geneseo come to town. Oswego closes out the regular season February 21st and 22nd with the north country trip to take on Potsdam and Plattsburgh.
