After a rough weekend last weekend against Elmira, the Oswego State Women's Hockey Team hosted Stevenson for their annual Pink at the Rink weekend. The team wore pink jerseys that were auctioned off to raise money for breast cancer awareness. Also all the money made off ticket sales went to breast cancer research as well. Now on to the action on the ice. The team had pushed Elmira to the very limit last weekend, but came up short. This weekend was a different story. Two games against Stevenson at home, and two wins against Stevenson at home.
First up was a Saturday afternoon battle which saw the Oswego offense explode for six goals in a 6-1 win. Oswego scored three times in the opening period, first from Mady Paul, her 2nd of the year, at 7:06. Then at 7:23, less than 20 seconds later, Brennan Butler scored her first career goal. Finally the scoring in the first was capped off at 19:35 when captain Olivia Boersen scored her 5th of the year. The 2nd period saw no scoring so we went into the 3rd with Oswego still carrying a 3-0 lead. It took 4:23 into the 3rd for Oswego to extend their lead, when Alli Ullrich scored on the powerplay, her first career goal, to give the Lakers a 4-0 lead. Lizzy Marks scored her 2nd of the year at the 11:07 mark to increase the lead. Stevenson broke the shutout at 16:30 when Katie Abbott scored her 4th of the year. Oswego finally put the game away at 18:53, when the birthday girl Jocelyn St Clair scored her 3rd of the year, her first career shorthanded goal, to put the game on ice and seal a 6-1 win for the Lakers.
Sarah Modzelewski took the loss for Stevenson, dropping her record to 3-7-0, as she stopped 42 of the 48 shots she faced. Tori Trovato got the win for Oswego, improving her record to 3-2-0, as she stopped 21 of the 22 shots she faced. Stevenson went 1 for 5 on the powerplay, while Oswego went 1 for 8 with the man advantage.
The Sunday matchup between these two teams was a much closer, tighter checking game than it was the day before. Oswego once again pulled out the victory, this time by a 2-1 score, with all the scoring coming early on in the hockey game. Oswego scored two goals quick, first at 2:02 when Olivia Boersen scored her 6th of the year, a powerplay goal to get Oswego on the board. Then at the 2:42 mark, just 40 seconds later, Ashley Lyman scored her 4th of the year. Stevenson got one back, when Jessie Capanelli scored her 5th of the year at 4:20 to cut the lead in half. That would be as close as Stevenson would get and all the scoring that would take place in the game, as Oswego came away with a nail biting 2-1 win.
Anastassia Nelson took the loss for Stevenson, dropping her record to 2-2-0, as she stopped 32 of the 34 shots she faced. Meanwhile Bridget Smith picked up the win for Oswego, improving her record to 4-0-2, as she stopped 11 of the 12 shots she faced.
Next up for the Lakers is a two game weekend road trip to Alumni Arena in Cortland, as the Red Dragons play host to the Lakers. First up is a game Friday February 7th at 7PM, and finally saturday February 8th at 2PM.
