Very Best Of The Decade

Crazy to think about isn't it? It's been a wild ride in the sports world over the last decade. We've seen curses broken, dynasty's made and legends rise. We've had really great moments, and really horrible ones as well. We won't really get into it as we discussed most of them on the show over the weekend. But what we will do is something a little bit different. Normally when we do the year end blogs on the show, we talk about who won what major championships in sports. Merry Christmas

This has become a yearly tradition. Each year for the holidays, I try my best to help spread a little Christmas joy to my fellow sports fans, more so those who love the game of hockey as much as I do. With that being said, I offer up my yearly tradition of the 12 Days of Christmas, only this time it's got a twist.

First up, its the 12 Days of Rick Jeanneret:

And of course how could we forget the 12 Days of Hockey:

So sit back, relax and enjoy the tunes!

Merry Christmas!

Best & Worst Of NFL Week Fifteen

Week fifteen has come and gone in the NFL and thanks to the action on the field, there's a lot clearer picture to what the NFL playoffs are going to look like this year. Who sits in what seeds are still to be determined, but we do know that New England, Green Bay, Seattle, San Francisco, and Buffalo all punched their tickets to the playoffs. And, at the same time, we saw playoff hopes for others fall apart. Thanks to their wins on Sunday the Eagles and Cowboys set themselves up for a game that could very well decide the East next week. Oh and we had some pretty good performances on the field by individual players as well. So here we go. Its the best and worst from the week that was in the NFL.

Best:
Sean McDermott, Head Coach Buffalo Bills
Twenty years is a long time to wait. 1999 was the last time that the Buffalo Bills not only made the playoffs, but finished a season with double digits in wins for a year. This week, they went into Pittsburgh and walked away with a hard fought 17-10 win over the Steelers, to reach ten wins for this year. A lot of that has to do with how coach McDermott has handled his team. This will mark the 2nd time in three years that Buffalo is a playoff team and the first time they've hit double digits in wins in twenty years. His team can run the ball really well and have a tough defense to play against. he out coached Mike Tomlin in a tough place to play in Pittsburgh. It shows they might not be able to catch the Patriots, but at least they know they can hang with some of the rest of the heavy hitters in the AFC this year.

Worst:
Freddie Kitchens, Head Coach Cleveland Browns
This was supposed to be a big season for the Browns, a team that was loaded and had, on paper, a team that was good enough to make the playoffs and possibly even win the division. But it's safe to say, sitting at 6-8, that this year has been a disappointment. It made it worse following a 38-24 loss to Arizona on Sunday, a game in which Freddie Kitchens looked to be in a bit over his head. It's been poor playcalling by, at times, by Kitchens. It's having stud playmakers like Landry and Beckham in not as much of an optimal position to make the big plays that are expected of them. Sure, the players aren't executing up to standards, some of that does fall on the coaching staff. They don't seem to be prepared on some weekends, which is what could be holding back the Browns.

Best:
Travis Kelce, Tight End, Kansas City Chiefs
I know he wasn't able to find the endzone on Sunday, but Travis Kelce was a big reason why Kansas City was able to come away with a 23-3 win over Denver and stay in the thick of the race in the conference. He's been one of Patrick Mahomes top targets all year, and again delivered Sunday. He finished with 11 catches for 142 yards. The yards topped all pass catchers in the league this week. He's one of those guys who can not only block, but can catch as well. He's been this way his whole career. He's not at like a Shannon Sharp or even Gronk level, but he still a very solid tight end in his own right and has been a massive reason why Kansas City has been the way they have on offense the last few years.

Worst:
Oakland Football

It's tough enough the fact that the Raiders are leaving the Bay Area at the end of the season. It was made worse the way they went out. Dropping the final home game of the year, a 20-16 decision to the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars. By the time the final buzzer went off at the Coliseum, it was an ugly scene. Fans were booing, throwing garbage on the field and even rushing the field. It got pretty nasty. It's just a sad state of affairs the way this chapter of Raiders football closed out. It's not the first time the Raiders bolted Oakland, having done that from 1982 to 1994 playing in Los Angeles. Now it seams as if they are leaving a more sour taste in fans mouth for their play on the field

Best:
Eli Manning, Quarterback New York Giants
It's been a rough year for the Giants this year, sitting at just three wins following a 36-20 win over the Dolphins at home. Besides beating Miami to snap a nine game losing streak, it was also the possible final sendoff at home for Eli Manning as the starting QB for the New York Giants. He finished the day going 20 for 28 for 2183 yards two touchdowns and three picks. Those are solid numbers for any QB and for Eli, ending with a win at home, it was kind of a fitting sendoff. He got a win, there was a huge standing ovation for the QB as he walked off the field. It was an outpouring of love from the Giants faithful for a Quarterback who had given so much to the Blue Red and White, which he also helped deliver two Super Bowl titles.

Worst:
Los Angeles Rams
This was a team that had high expectations attached to it. After falling to the Patriots in the Super Bowl last year, Los Angeles was factored into being a favorite to at least go back to the NFC title game again this year. Going into this week's meeting with the Dallas Cowboys, the Rams had a slim chance of hanging onto and possibly making the post season. After falling 44-21 to the Boys, the odds of Los Angeles getting back are all but gone. Todd Gurely has been nowhere nearly as effective as he was in the past. Jared Geoff looks off a tad. It just doesn't seem to be clicking for the Rams this year, for whatever reason. And with the way things have gone this year, it looks like this will be the first time the Rams are going to miss the playoffs under Sean McVay.

Best:
Kenyan Drake, Running Back, Arizona Cardinals
Here's a guy who was forgotten about by a lot of people earlier this year. When he got shipped off from Miami to Arizona, it didn't really raise a lot of eyebrows. But for one game, a 38-24 win by Arizona over Cleveland, he made people remember his name. He finished the day with 22 carries for 137 yards, which lead all rushers this week. Oh and lets not forget the fact that he just so happen to rush for four touchdowns on the day as well. its one of those games that can go down in the books as a huge statement game. Who knows if Drake really has much outstanding play left in his tank, but the Cards, and any fantasy owners who started him this week, are very thankful for the performance he put on.

Taylor Hall Heads To Desert

Lets go back to the Summer of 2016. Thew New Jersey Devils had been struggling to try and find an identity. They hadn't had a solid franchise player in New Jersey in some time. Then Ray Shero pulls off a big trade with the Oilers, a lopsided one in fact, landing Taylor Hall in the East Coast. And it worked. Hall won a Hart Trophy as league MVP and pretty much carried the Devils into the playoff spot two years ago. Now here we sit, and Hall is no longer a Devil.

There's been a lot of speculation the deal was announced earlier today. The full trade is Taylor Hall and Blake Speers were sent to the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for Arizona's first-round pick in 2020, Arizona's third-round selection (conditional) in 2021, as well as prospects Kevin Bahl, Nick Merkley and Nate Schnarr. This is also the final year of Hall's deal, which is a $6 million cap hit. Half of that is being payed by the Devils.

How does this effect both teams?

For the Coyotes it gives them another high powered weapon to play with Phil Kessel, Clayton Keller and Oliver Ekman Larson. Oh and it's adding yet another layer to the Coyotes, who are tied for first in the Pacific with the Oilers and a point up on the Golden Knights. Adding a guy like Hall makes this Coyotes an even stronger offensive team. So this is huge for Arizona, who not only get a solid rental but could possibly lock up Hall long term depending on how well things go in the desert the rest of the season.

As for the Devils, they're a second to last place team in the Metro division, the only team worse than them is the Red Wings. This isn't a full blow rebuild in Jersey, they have strong pieces already in place. It's just a retooling of what they already have. Now, there is still a chance that Hall could sign back in New Jersey once the offseason hits. But, lets say that he doesn't. New Jersey is still in decent shape, at least by comparison to what Shero got when he took over in 2015. Sure, they gave up a stud defenseman in Adam Larson on the blueline, a move which still hurts the Devils, in terms of lack of defensive depth. But, with Hall gone, its not like the Devils don't have any pieces at all. They've got Nico Hischier and Jack Hughes, to serve as the foundation. They have talented young players in Jesper Bratt, Jesper Boqvist, Pavel Zacha, Mackenzie Blackwood and more.

The trade does sting the Devils, but they aren't totally crippled by the move. They can still build and possibly even bring him back. It could work out well long term for both sides

Josh Gordon Out

Some people just never learn. It seems like this is becoming a broken record. The NFL has suspended indefinitely Josh Gordon, of the Seattle Seahawks, for violating the NFL's policies on performance-enhancing substances and substances of abuse. The league announced the suspension Monday, one day after Gordon appeared in his fifth game this season with the Seahawks.

IT really is a sad story for Gordon, as this marks his fifth suspension in the last eight years for Josh Gordon, who has all the talent in the world to be a top flight wide out, but more on that later. While playing in Cleveland, Gordon missed all of both the 2015 and 2016 seasons due to issues, and also was suspended last December for violating terms of his reinstatement, missing the final three games of the season with the New England Patriots. New England finally had enough after they got Gordon back for the start of this year, but they waved him at the end of last month. Next day, Seattle took the chance on him and had him for five games, before this announcement came down.

When he's on the field, he's got all the gifts to be able to be great. Look at what he did in Cleveland in 2013, his best year in the league. In 14 games played, he had 87 catches for 1,646 yards, which is the only time in his career he reached the thousand yard mark. I will go so far to say that he had the talent level to be able to reach the level of a guy like Antonio Brown or even Calvin Johnson when those guys were in there prime. Gordon had that kind of speed and game breaking ability.

It's just really sad to see what's become of a guy who had the world in front of him. He had all the talent in the world and it seems to be lost to the mental side of things, which is the one aspect of football that Gordon never seemed to be able to get. Talent of a great player, mind of something completely different. I do hope, for his own sake, he's finally able to get the help he needs and can get his life back on track

Gerrit Cole Got Paid

The price of Major League Baseball players is going up year after year. Last year was the big splash for hitters, with Manny Machado, Bryce Harper and Mike Trout all getting massive contracts. This year, its been the year of the pitcher. First, Zach Wheeler got five years and $118 Million from the Phillies. Then Stephen Strausberg signed a seven year extension worth $245 Million. Now, to top the list, Gerrit Cole, the biggest name on the free agent pitching market, got serious bank. The New York Yankees gave the star pitcher a nine year contract worth $345 Million, with an opt out option after five years. What does this mean for not only this season, but for future seasons?

Lets look at Cole's numbers first. Last year, Cole finished second in the American League in Cy Young voting to teammate Justin Verlander. Cole had a 20-5 record with an AL best 2.50 ERA and 326 strikeouts, which also lead the AL. All of it coming in 212.1 innings. To make last year even more impressive, Cole lost only one game after May 22nd. That one loss was game one of the World Series. That's a level of domination not really seen much anymore.

It comes as a big step for the Yankees in their chase for a 28th world championship, as he adds another component to an already lethal lineup.  Just look at the pitching staff. Cole now sits as the ace at the top of a starting staff that includes Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, James Paxton, J.A. Happ and Domingo German, who might be suspended at the season's start under baseball's domestic violence policy. It helps bolster an already deep lineup that could make this team even better. And with the hitting that's already in place in the Bronx, they could be a huge player in the American League next season.

This could also mean huge contracts for other pitchers down the line. The next time a pitcher comes up for a new contract, if he coming off a year like the one Cole just had, then it going to try to compare or even pass this kind of a deal. Oh and this deal puts Cole as the 4th highest paid contract of all time. The only one's higher than his were Giancarlo Stanton, Bryce Harper and Mike Trout.

The question is, can he live up to all the money he was paid? If he's anything close to the year he's coming off last year in Houston, then he'll be just fine, and will be worth the investment. Way too early to tell that if the ink is still drying. In theory, its a massive move for the Yankees and it sets the standard for what signing a pitcher could be worth in the future.

Best & Worst Of NFL Week Thirteen

We've hit the home stretch, as week thirteen has come and gone in the NFL. We're down to the last month of games and still a lot has to be decided. After a few lopsided games on Thanksgiving, Sunday gave us some tighter affairs. Six of the games on Sunday had been decided by one score or less. And then we got the Dolphins, Redskins and Bengals, who going into action this week had a combined four wins. They all won on Sunday. We also had a possible Super Bowl preview on Sunday with the Ravens and 49ers going at it, With Baltimore coming out on top. Oh and the Texans toppled New England, which also could have huge implications as well. With all that being said, here's some of the best and worst from the week that was in the NFL.

Best:
Baltimore Ravens
This one had a lot of hype coming into it, and for good reason. it could be a potential Super Bowl preview with the way the two teams were playing heading into Sunday's action. Baltimore came away with a huge 20-17 win over the 49ers, putting both teams now at 10-2. This was a big statement game for the Ravens and for Lamar Jackson, who had another solid game himself. He had 16 carries for 101 rush yards. This going along with the 14 of 15 for 105 passing yards and a touchdown. Jackson is playing like a man possessed and is carrying the Baltimore offense. And lets not forget about the Ravens defense, which caused a couple of turnovers and kept the 49ers pass attack in check for the most part. Could this be a possbile preview of the final game of the year? We shall find out in about two months time, and if its anything like this one, it will be a hell of a game.

Worst:
New York Jets

This team had gotten on a bit of a roll, winning three straight games heading into this weeks matchup with the previously winless Bengals. But that seems to be a thign with the Jets. play good against decent teams, then fail to show up against teams you should be able to handle. The fact that in this season the Jets have now lost not once, but TWICE to previously winless teams, says a lot. The Bengals picked up their first win of the year, beating the Jets 22-6 on Sunday. Top call this game humiliating would be a very big understatement. There's no run game, no help for Sam Darnold by the line to protect him. nothing worked right at all. Couple this with the fact that the Jets had already lost earlier this year to the winless (at the time) Dolphins and it adds up to an embarrassment that is going to be hard to shake off.

Best:
DeVante Parker, Wide Receiver, Miami Dolphins
It's possible that the win over the Jets earlier this year maybe the kick in the teeth that the Dolphins needed to get going. They've improved their record to 3-9 following Sunday's 37-31 win over the Eagles. Big reason for that was the play of DeVante Parker, who was in a pretty good groove on Sunday afternoon. He had the second most receiving yards on Sunday. Parker finished with 7 catches for 159 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Oh yeah, Parker is currently on pace to surpass his career highs in receptions, yards and touchdowns. If, somehow Miami can figure this thing out and can add a long-term quarterback and some other weapons, Parker could be on the rise heading into 2020. He keeps putting up performances like this, then you got a bright star shining down in Miami.

Worst:
Adam Vinatieri, Kicker Indianapolis Colts
The old saying goes that time is undefeated. The Colts veteran kicker is finding that out the hard way. Adam Vinatieri is 46 years old and has been a kicker in the NFL since 1996. You kind of knew that this was, at some point, going to catch up to him. It's now starting to appear that it finally has. Not only has this year been a rough one for Vinatieri, it got worse with how things unfolded in the Colts 31-17 loss to the Titans on Sunday. Tennessee easily blocked a fourth quarter field goal attempt and ran it back for a touchdown to take a 24-17 lead. They then added another touchdown to improve to seal the victory. Tennessee now sits at 7-5, while the Colts to 6-6. The AFC wild card race is tightening up and the Colts took a huge hit with the loss. There was a stretch where it looked like the Colts could make a strong push for, at the very worst, the top wild card spot. Now it looks like they might come close to missing altogether

Best:

Derrius Guice, Running Back Washington Redskins
Guice had been splitting time with Adrian Petterson in the Redskins backfield most of the year, but after the performance he put out on display on Sunday, that splitting time thing might not be around in DC much longer. Washington actually got itself a win, beating Carolina 39-21, with the running game carrying the redskins offense. Guice had himself a day, rushing for 129 yards and two touchdowns. And all of this coming on just ten carries, one of which went for 60 yards.Lets not mix things up here, Adrian Peterson had a solid day in his own right, finishing with 99 yards on 13 carries, but at some point Guice has to take over this starting job. If there was any inmdication of this, Sunday's win should be that

Worst:
Tom Brady, Quarterback New England Patriots
Having trust issues with your offense is bad. Having it happen heading into the final month of the season is making things worse. Seems like that's starting to happen in New England right now. New England fell 28-22 to Houston and it wasn't good for Brady. While yes, Brady did amass 326 passing yards and three touchdowns, it was pretty much for nothing. Sure, two of those scores came on lengthy drives, but by that point, theywere in garbage time. Brady has a disconnect with his receivers and it looks like he’s still missing the security of a dependable target like retired tight end Rob Gronkowski. Julian Edelman remains as Brady’s most trusted target, but for him to improve and for the Patriots to shake this offensive inefficiency, other receivers have to step up. Oh and to make this worse, New England slipped away from their hold on the top seed in the AFC, as Baltimore grabbed it with their win. And the Bills are breathing right down New England's neck.

Best:
New Orleans Saints
Being the first team to clinch a playoff spot has got to be a great feeling. Don't believe me, ask the New Orleans Saints. They did so by beating up on division rival Atlanta, to the tune of a 26-18 victory This turns out to be huge because not only does it lock up a NFC South title for the 3rd year in a row, but it allows the team to focus itself on the top seed in the NFC and home field throughout the playoffs. They still have a bad taste in their mouth from last year, and hopefully this can be a step in the right direction to get that taste removed from it's mouth.

Worst:
Jacksonville Jaguars

It's been a bit of a rough go of it in Jacksonville lately. They fell to Tampa on Sunday 28-11, dropping their record to 4-8 on the year. They had spent all this money in the offseason on quarterbacks and they haven't lived up to expectation. To be fair, Nick Foles did get hurt for a part of the year, which lead to Gardner Minshew seeing playing time, but even when Foles was healthy, he hasn't really produced. Look at what happened against the Bucs on Sunday. Jacksonville fell behind 25-0 with Nick Foles throwing an interception and losing two fumbles before being benched in the third quarter. That's not good for this team to try and even remoly save face on this season.
