Best & Worst NFL Week Fourteen

Week fourteen has come and gone in the NFL. We saw a huge shakeup at the top of the NFC East, while the hopes for Kansas City to reach the top in the AFC took a big hit in its own right. We had an elite showdown late, and one of the most boring games ever all in the same weekend. Lets not waste anymore time and jump right into it. Here's the best, and worst, of week fourteen around the NFL.

Best: Jake Browning Quarterback Cincinnati Bengals'
There's still life in Cincinnati for a shot at the playoffs. When Joe Burrow went down with injury in week eleven and was done for the rest of the season, things weren't looking too good for the Bengals. Browning stepped in and took a little time, but he was able to find footing. Sure it started out with a pair of losses, but now Browning looks good in two straight wins, including Sunday in a 34-14 Bengals win over the Colts. Browning went 18 of 24 for 275 yards, a pair of touchdowns and a pick. Yes the Bengals are 7-6 and they are on the outside looking in at the playoffs as of this writing, but they would and could be a lot worse off without Burrow if Browning hasn't been playing as well as he has.

Worst: Kadarius Toney, Wide Receiver Kansas City Chiefs
This is going to be, without a doubt, one of the most talked about plays for quite some time. Buffalo walked into Kansas City and walked out with a 20-17 win. This caused the Chiefs to lose a stranglehold on the AFC West. but that's not the biggest story here. Yes it is a big story, but its not the biggest one. The biggest one is the offsides call on Kadarius Toney on what would have been a go ahead score for KC late in the game. Kelce made a catch, ran out of room and threw the ball backwards to Toney, who ran it the rest of the way for a touchdown. The refs threw a flag on the play, calling it back for offsides. The guilty party? Kadarius Toney. Sure Kansas City coaching staff was upset at the refs for not warning them about Toney being offsides and giving him a chance to reset. Toney has to be paying attention to where he's lined up to begin with so this is on him as well.

Best: Zach Wilson, Quarterback New York Jets
I can't believe I'm even writing this, but after getting benched for a couple of weeks, it looks like Zach Wilson got the message. For at least one week anyway. New York found a way to snap its five game losing streak, with a 30-6 win over the Texans at home. the first half looked bad for both teams. Once the second half got going, Zach showed why he was taken second overall by the Jets. He finished the day going 27 of 36 for 301 yards two touchdowns and no picks. First time we'd seen a Jet do that in almost a year. It's a better than even chance Zach won't be back as a Jet next year. Should he keep up solid performances like this, he might be able to land himself a job somewhere else in the league.

Worst: Scoring In Las Vegas
You would like to think in a league like the NFL, we would see some high scoring games. More entertaining football this late in the season. Well that wasn't the case here. Played in Las Vegas on Sunday, the Raiders played host to the visiting Minnesota Vikings. Minnesota walked away with a 3-0 win. No that isn't a typo, the Vikings actually won by a 3-0 score in a full NFL game. This is how the day went down: Punt, Punt, Punt, Punt, Punt, Missed field goal, Punt, Punt, End of half, Punt, Fumble, Punt, Punt, Punt, Punt, Punt, Punt, Punt, Punt, Field goal, interception, punt, fumble. That's the entire game, every drive, right there.

Best: Sean Peyton Head Coach Denver Broncos
Not a clue as to what Sean Peyton has been doing in that locker room in Denver, but whatever it is, it seems to be working. After beating the Chargers 24-7 on Sunday, Denver has won six of their last seven games. This coming after starting the season 1-5. They now sit just a game back in the AFC West. Their showings as of late against the Chiefs, Bills and Packers speaks volumes for what Peyton has been able to get out of his team since that awful start. Now aside going to Detroit to face a tough Lions team, the rest of the way the Broncos schedule looks favorable. Home to New England and the Chargers before ending the year at the Raiders. There's a pretty good chance the Broncos could snap that seven year playoff drought this season

Worst: Kickers
Being a kicker in the NFL isn't easy. They do have a rough go of it on a lot of days around the league. But this past Sunday, in a lot of the early games too, it was a rough go of it for kickers in the league. Here's a look at some of what happened to kickers on Sunday. Matt Gay of the Colts missed a 38-yard field goal and an extra point. Younghoe Koo of the Falcons missed two field goals from 50 and 52 yards. Blake Grupe of the Saints missed a 29-yard field goal. Riley Patterson of the Lions missed an extra point. Matt Ammendola of the Texans missed an extra point. Eddy Pineiro of the Panthers missed a 41-yard field goal. Cairo Santos of the Bears had an extra point blocked. Sure I know there was bad weather in a few of these games but Yikes.

Milestone Moment For JT

Hitting 1,000 Points in the National Hockey League is quite an accomplishment. To date, only 98 men in the history of the game have done that. The 98th person to join that list is Maple Leafs Captain John Tavares, who joined that list last night on Long Island with a two point performances.

Fitting that it happened to come against the team he started his NHL career with.

For the first nine years in the NHL, Tavares played for the New York Islanders, the team that took him with the first overall pick in the 2009 draft. He played 669 games in an Islanders sweater, collecting 621 points. He then moved on to the Maple Leafs as a free agent in 2018 and has collected 379 points  in 385 games and counting. When Tavares got the milestone point, which was an assist on Morgan Riley's tying goal in the final seconds of regulation, the Leafs poured off the bench to congratulate their captain. The Islanders also show a small video tribute/message for Tavares on the big board, which was met with boos from Islanders fans, but more on that shortly.

While he's never been the quickest skater, Tavares has shown an ability to get where he has to and with good agility. He's got great hands and vision and does make the guys that play around him better. He made the Islanders a more respectable franchise during the nine years he was there before heading off to Toronto. While in Canada his production has still been there. The biggest knock against Tavares is that, while wearing the C on his chest, he hasn't been able to really lead a team out of the second round of the playoffs. That still doesn't take away from the credit he deserves for hitting the 1,000 point milestone which is a major accomplishment in this league.

Now then, to address what happened at UBS Arena after Tavares hit his 1,000th point. He still is getting booed six years after he left Long Island.

Look I get it, I do. I know most of my fellow Islanders fans are STILL unhappy with the guy for not only leaving, but the way he left. Listen to me what happened with Tavares isn't even close to what Dale Hunter and Darcy Tucker did. If your an Islander fan you know what I'm talking about. If not, those two guys are know for injuring two Isles players during heated playoff series and have been hated by fans to this day. What Tavares did isn't even the same thing as what Kirk Muller did. Again if you know you know.

It wasn't Tavares call not to trade him before he left, that came from ownership and upper management. That's why he walked and we got nothing back in return. I don't blame Tavares for leaving the guy did what he had to do and did what he felt was right for him and his career. He didn't hurt the franchise, ownership did at that time. This is just me talking but I've never  had ill will against the guy. The only ones I have are the ones that I listed above and for those reason. But Tavares leaving for Toronto, I've never booed the guy. Why? Because its childish and a stupid thing to do for a guy who gave everything he had to the team and the game.

Congratulations to John Tavares on reaching 1,000 career points!

Best & Worst NFL Week Thirteen

Week thirteen has come and gone in the NFL and what a week it was. Sure it was a light week, given the fact that six teams had a bye week this week. We got five weeks left in the regular season, but after this week the top teams in the conferences have shifted. Miami leaped over KC as tops in the AFC, while the Eagles still hold serve atop the NFC, but have finally dropped their second game of the year. We had individual players make strong claims for MVP, while others took a step back. Lets not waste any time, here's some of the best and worst from week thirteen in the NFL.

Best: Tyreek Hill Wide Receiver Miami Dolphins
There was not much of a doubt that the best receiver in the game is Tyreek Hill. The way he been playing this season he's playing at an MVP level. So too is Tua, but the play of Hill is allowing for Tua to hit his level. That was on display in the Dolphins 45-15 win over Washington last weekend. He finished with 157 yards on five catches, two of those catches went for touchdowns. Those 157 receiving yards from Hill were more than Washington had through the air as a team Sam Howell threw for just 127 yards on the day. Talk about going off Tyreek did that on Sunday.

Worst: Mike Tomlin Head Coach Pittsburgh Steelers
Your going into this weeks matchup facing a Cardinals team that had won just two games during the regular season up to this point. This, in theory, should have been a win for the Steelers. Instead it was a 24-10 win for Arizona. Yes, it does suck that Kenny Pickett got hurt and they had to go to Mitch Trubisky. But that's not on the coach, the rest of it does fall on Mike Tomlin. He couldn't have the rest of the boys ready for this game? Was there no prep for this game for being able to face Arizona? This kind of lack of prep can't happen. Yes I know you can't plan for injury to your quarterback but still.

Best: Gardner Minshew Quarterback Indianapolis Colts
When Anthony Richardson went down with a season ending shoulder injury for the Colts, there was a lot of questions for what might happen with this team and the direction they were going to go in. Enter Gardner Minshew, and Minshew Mania is running wild in Indy right now. They now sit in 2nd place in the AFC south with a 7-5 record. They are also sitting on a four game winning streak, following a 31-28 win over the Titans last weekend. A lot of that has been the influence of Gardner Minshew who threw for 312 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the win. None was bigger than a 55-yard bomb late in overtime to receiver Alec Pierce. It set up the Colts winning score. He has been having a massive impact on this Colts team and they are rolling right now and Gardner has them in a spot for a playoff push right now.

Worst: Brad Allen officiating Crew
The Sunday night game between the Chiefs and Packers was supposed to be a fun game to watch. But it didn't turn out that way in the 4th quarter, thanks in large part to some horrendous calls from the refs. Now, normally I'm never one to bash refs for making, or not making, calls. But what we saw Sunday in the Kansas City 42-19 win was beyond anything I'd seen in quite some time. Brad Allen and his crew missed some pretty blatant calls in the 4th quarter that weren't called. One was the missed call on roughing the passer on Patrick Mahomes who got walloped while in bounds and it wasn't called for roughing the passer. Oh it gets worse. The second was an obvious defensive pass interference that should've been called against Packers cornerback Carrington Valentine. It should've given the Chiefs the ball inside the 10-yard line. Sure mistakes happen, but ones like this can change the course of a game and they can't happen.

Best: San Francisco 49ers
You want to talk about a dominating performance, look no further than what the 49ers did on Sunday. They beat the tar out the Eagles to the tune of a 42-19 win. And doing it in Philadelphia no less. Brock Purdy threw for 314 yards and four touchdowns. He hit Deebo twice (who had 114 yards on four catches). Christian McCaffery had 150 total yards on the day. the offense went off. And so to did the defense, who was up in Jalen Hurts face all day long and sacked him three times. It was one of the most complete performances they've had in a long time. Sure they still have tough divisional games coming up with the Seahawks and Rams, but if they keep up with performances close to this, then the Niners could be in great shape for taking the NFC's top seed come playoff time.

Worst: Philadelphia Eagles
As just mentioned above the Niners put a whopping on the Eagles. Why does this one sting worse than any other loss this week? Well because coming into the day, the Eagles had been the only one loss team in the league still there at this point (Having lost only to the lowly Jets earlier in the year). They not only lost but they got their doors blown off by the 49ers. And its going to be a telling sign for the Eagles the rest of the way. Sure their final three games of the year are against the Giants twice with a game against the Cardinals in between. But the next two games are both on the road, one against Dallas and the other against Seattle. Both very tough tests. IF the Eagles can't rebound from what happened against San Francisco, they lose grip on teh top seed in the conference and who knows what could happen

1K On The Bay

Having a thousand receiving yards or more in an NFL season is an impressive thing to be able to do. Being able to do it multiple times in a career is an even more impressive feet. It's only been done three times in NFL history where a receiver has hit the century mark more than ten times. Jerry Rice did it 14 times. randy Moss did it ten times. And now we can add Mike Evans name to that list as well. Evans and Jerry Rice are the only receivers in the history of the NFL to do it in ten consecutive years.

Rice has the record at 11 years, doing it from 1986 to 1996. But Evans is the only one to do it in the first ten consecutive years in the NFL. He came close a couple times to having the streak stopped. In 2017 he finished with 1,001 yards. Then in 2020 he had 1,006 yards. Last year was 1,012. But he's hit the mark every year.

Since he entered the NFL in 2014, Evans has been one of the most consistent wide outs in the game, as the numbers have shown. And he's done it with different QB's throwing to him. He's had Josh McCown, Mike Glennon, Jameis Winston, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Tom Brady, and now Baker Mayfield all throw passes to him. He's been thrown to 1,288 times while hauling in 744 of those passes, and counting. In total, with those 10 straight season it has totaled 11,437 yards. And it doesn't look like he's showing any signs of slowing down now. Evans said to reporters after the game he hopes to be able to keep this streak going for however long his career lasts. Will that still be here in Tampa? Who knows. Now the goal is clear, be a playoff team.

With a record like this, it leads one to wonder. Where does this land Evans among the all time greatest Bucs players? There have been some pretty good offensive players that come to mind when you think of the Bucs. James Wilder, Mike Alstott, Warrick Dunn, Mark Carrier, Keenan McCardell all come to mind. At the end of it all, Mike Evans will go down as by far the greatest offensive player this team has ever had and place him squarely in the top five. The only guys that could ever pass Evans for the Greatest Buccaneer ever would be defensive guys like Derrick Brooks, Warren Sapp, Lee Roy Selmon and Ronde Barber.

What Mike Evans has done in his career here in Tampa Bay has been incredible and here's hoping it keeps going for a long, long time.

Big Night For Big Swede

Playing a game in the National Hockey League is a huge accomplishment. Doing it over a thousand times is an even bigger accomplishment. That's a pretty elite club. 382 in fact have joined that club. The newest member of that club is Victor Hedman. The Lightning blueliner joined that club tonight, in a 4-0 win over the Dallas Stars.

Hedman was the second overall pick of the Lightning in 2009, taken only behind John Tavares who went to the Islanders. Hedman has spent his entire career in a Bolts uniform. He became the 3rd man to play his 1,000th game in a Lightning jersey, joining Vincent Lecavalier and Steven Stamkos. Hedman became the seventh Sweden-born defenseman, and 18th Swede overall, to play in 1,000 games. Hedman has had a massive impact on this team. A Norris Trophy in 2018. Two Stanley Cup titles in 2020 and 2021, including a Conn Smyth Trophy win in 2020. Oh, and Hedman is the Lightning all time leader in points (677), goals (148) and assists (529) by a defenseman.

Victor has meant so much to this team and this city. On the ice, he's a true leader on this team and the best defenseman this team has ever had. He can control the play with a big hit, a great pass, a bomb of a shot and a great defensive play. He can pretty much do it all on the Bolts blue line. Off the ice, he has really embraced the Tampa Bay community. He does numerous charity events in and around the Tampa Bay area, both in season and during the off season.

By all accounts, when all is said and done, Hedman could find a place at the Hockey Hall Of Fame in Toronto.

Congrats Heddy on a thousand games played!

Best & Worst NFL Week Twelve

Week Twelve has come and gone in the NFL and what a week it was around the league. We had a couple of whippings take place on Thanksgiving night, while Sunday night saw its fair share of drama. We got offenses that are starting to find a groove again, while others are hitting the wrong time to sputter. So lets not waste any more time. Here's some of the best and worst from week twelve in the NFL.

Best: Pittsburgh Steelers Offense
There had been some complaints about the Pittsburgh offense this season. Well this past Sunday, in a 16-10 win over the Bengals, the offense showed up. And in a big way. As a team, the Steelers had 33 carries for 133 yards, lead by 99 of those yards from Najee Harris. Kenny Picket threw for 278 yards, 120 of which went to tight end Pat Freiermuth. By the time the day was all said and done, the Steelers racked up 412 yards of offense. That kind of offensive output from the Steelers hasn't happened since week two of the 2020 season in a win over the Denver Broncos. That covers 54 total games and was a long time coning for Steelers fans to witness that offensive outburst.

Worst: Jake Browning Quarterback Cincinnati Bengals
Going from Joe Burrow to Jake Browning isn't an easy transition. And its hurting whatever playoff hopes the Bengals had left. When Burrow went down with the wrist injury, they had to go with Browning under center. He couldn't do much of anything in the Bengals 16-10 loss, which we just touched on. The Bengals mustered just 222 total yards of offense. As we just talked about the Steelers offense exploded and the Bengals fell apart. Browning looked like a backup QB and not a QB 1. He did throw for 227, but was sacked four times and picked off once. That pick lead to the Steelers scoring the go ahead touchdown. The next Cincy possession lead to a punt after Browning ran right into a sack. Ouch.

Best: Shane Steichen Head Coach Indianapolis Colts
With the things going on off the field for the Colts, hat tip to head coach Shane Steichen. He was able to pull his team together. With the release of Shaq Leonard it made for quite the story in Indy ahead of their game with the Bucs. But the coach got the club together and Indy walked away with a hard fought 27-20 win over Tampa. Tampa got the jump early but thanks to the steady play from Gardner Minshew, the Colts overcame it and were able to hold off the Bucs at the end of the ballgame. Oh and the win got them back over .500 on the year. If Shane is hoping to keep winning and making a push for the playoffs, keep feeding the run game of Jonathan Taylor and Zach Moss.

Worst: Dennis Allen, Head Coach New Orleans Saints

He had one goal in mind this week. Come out of the bye week and beat an inept Falcons team. On paper, that seems like a simple task. Well things didn't exactly go as planned for the Saints, who fell 24-15 to Atlanta. Granted, having Chris Olave exit early due to injury didn't help the cause for the Saints. And New Orleans gave Atlanta a short game and the Falcons took advantage of it. New Orleans defense made Desmond Ridder and Bijan Robinson look like one of the game's most electrifying duos when it counted. Allen did not in any way, shape or form, have his boys ready and it showed against a bad team.

Best: Tommy DeVito Quarterback New York Giants
It wasn't a pretty win, but a win is a win never the less. For the second week in a row the New York Giants have won a football game, this time a 10-7 victory over the New England Patriots. Enter Tommy DeVito, who was getting his first start in front of his hometown. He got his first career win last week, and he delivered again in the building he lives just twelve miles from. He went 17 of 25 for 191 yards and a touchdown toss to Isaiah Hodgins. He was sacked six times by that New England defense, which is something that his line is going to have to work on. Still DeVito performance has been good enough to get the Giants wins the last two weeks.

Worst: Matt Ammendola Kicker Houston Texans
There's times I feel bad for putting Kickers on this list, but this isn't one of them. Houston came up just short, falling 24-21 to Jacksonville. C.J. Stroud almost pulled off the impossible. He was down by ten points and had the Texans within striking distance in this ballgame. But Ammendola had trouble on this day, missing twice from distance. First he missed from 50 yards out early in the game. Then, with 30 seconds left, Houston tried for a 58 yard kick. It would have tied the game, and at a tough distance no less. What does he do? Doink! Right off the crossbar. Yes I know hitting kicks from those distances are very tough to do for any kicker. But it ended up being the difference.

Milestone Night For Clutterbuck

When Cal Clutterbuck was drafted by the Minnesota Wild, 72nd overall in 2006, there wasn't much expectations around the 3rd round draft pick. he was going to have an impact, sure on the Wild and whoever else he ended up playing for. But nobody expected him to have the career he's had. Tonight, in the Islanders home game against the Philadelphia Flyers, the team will honor Cal for playing in his 1,000th career game.

Cal joined the Wild full time in 2008. After spending five seasons and 346 games in Minnesota, he went to play on Long Island, where's he's spent the last eleven years and 655 games. During that time, nobody has thrown more hits in the NHL then Cal. He's thrown 3,802 of them in his career, and still counting. He's the 11th player in history to play their 1,000th career game in an Islanders uniform.

Everybody knows Cal for his physical presence, which is a huge factor as to why he's been able to stay in the NHL for over a thousand games. He can score. He's registered 138 goals and 280 points. HE can provide a spark in that regards too. He's also one of the more well rounded players in the league. He's a great penalty killer and a solid lock down defender. Cal's talents allow the coach to have faith in him to be used to hold a lea late in games.

He's also proven to be a leader in the room. During ten of his eleven seasons on Long Island, Cal has had a letter on his sweater. He's been a mentor to a lot of the younger guys on the hockey club and had a positive impact on a lot of the guys he's called teammates over the course of his career.

Congratulations Cal on hitting the milestone thousand game mark!

Big Cat Is Back

There are few goalies that come around in the NHL that seem to be once in a generation talent. The Tampa Bay Lightning have that in the form of Andrei Vasilevskiy. Around Tampa he's known to one and all as The Big Cat! He missed the first two months of this season after having back surgery but made his return to the nets last night against the Carolina Hurricanes. Vasey helped power the Bolts to an 8-2 win!

The big story of the night, besides the offensive explosion, was the return of the star netminder. And it didn't looked like he missed a beat. he looked sound positionally making his saves. Sure, he had some slow moments, like he was just getting his footing back, and that is understandable. This was his first game in the Lightning net since last April when the Bolts were bounced from the playoffs. But that will come back in time. Once he gets his game back, its going to be tough to play against Tampa this year.

What stuck out for me was the Lightning offense in this game as well. At the start the Bolts had only one shot on goal against Carolina, which seems almost typical. What I mean is, there were times during his career where Vasey would have to stand on his head and get no or very little offensive support. That in terms of shots on goal, let alone actual goal scoring. Eventually, as last night wore on, Tampa's offense did find its stride. If this team is to really go anywhere on a deep playoff run, Vasey is going to need the offensive support he got last night. Doesn't have to be that high every night, but it does need to show up to where he doesn't have to keep standing on his head on most nights.

This stretch the Lightning had without the Big Cat in net proved invaluable for the team as well. Jonas Johansson got the bulk of the starts with Vasilevskiy being out hurt. Johansson did a very respectable job holding down the nets and showed he's going to be a fine backup. It also, I would like to think, give head coach Jon Cooper a little more confidence in playing Johansson a few more starts during the regular season and giving Vasilevskiy a few more nights off during the season so that way he can be better rested and more focused by the time the playoffs roll around in the spring.

Welcome back Big Cat!

Manager of The Year
AL: Brandon Hyde, Baltimore Orioles
NL: Skip Schumaker, Miami Marlins

Pretty impressive that Hyde was able to beat out Kevin Cash of the Rays and Bruce Bochy of the Rangers to win the award, but there's good reason for that. What Hyde was able to do with this Baltimore club is remarkable. He took a team that lost 115 games last year, and turn them into a 101 win team this year. It was also the O's first division title since 2014. Those 101 wins were the most by Baltimore since 1979 and they lead the league in comeback victories on the season with 48.

As for the NL, Skip beat out Brian Snitker of the Braves and Craig Counsell of the Brewers. Both of those teams, the Brewers and Braves were expected to be in the division races and in the playoffs all season long. Miami came in as surprise team making the playoffs. This was the first time that the Marlins have had a winning season, in a non shortened season, since 2009. This was also the first time that the Marlins had made the playoffs since winning the World Series in 2003. So ending a twenty year playoff drought for a full season had to feel really good in Miami.

Rookie of The Year:
AL: Gunner Henderson, Baltimore Orioles
NL: Corbin Carroll, Arizona Diamondbacks

When you beat out Triston Casas of the Red Sox and Tannor Bibee of Cleveland, you doing something right. That's what Gunner Henderson did. The number one prospect in baseball lived up to the hype and then some for the O's with 28 homers and 66 extra base hits.

What Corbin Caroll managed to do to take ROY in the NL was hit 25 homers and steal 53 bases. It made him the first 20-50 rookie in league history. Oh and he was the first player in history to hit those numbers while also hitting double digits in triples.

Cy Young Award:
AL: Gerrit Cole, New York Yankees
NL: Blake Snell, San Diego Padres

In the AL, Cole beat out Sonny Gray of the Twins and Kevin Gussman of the Jays. Both those guys put up solid seasons, but Cole was just better than anybody else. Why? Because Cole lead the AL in ERA, innings pitched and opponents batting average. Oh and over the final month of the season, which spanned five starts for Cole, he allowed just four runs over 35 innings. That was a level of dominance that couldn't be touched.

Same thing, over the second half of the year, allowed Blake Snell to walk away with the award in the NL. He edged out Logan Webb of the Giants and Zac Gallen of the Diamondbacks to take home the honor. Sure, Snell walked more than anybody else, finishing the year with 99. but at the same time he was almost impossible to hit this year as well. His 2.25 ERA was the best in baseball. His 12 scoreless starts tied for the most by a qualifying pitcher since divisional play began back in 1969. Oh and he won pitcher of the month twice as well, in both June and September.

MVP
AL: Shohei Otani, Los Angeles Angels
NL: Ronald Acuna Jr, Atlanta Braves.

Both guys walked away with unanimous wins for MVP this year. Nothing against what Semien and Seager did for Texas, but this is Otani we talking about here. He played in 135 games this year and lead the AL with 44 homers. He also had a 3.14 ERA and 167 strikeouts over 132 innings before being shut down on the mound due to a right elbow injury.

Then over in the NL Acuna won beating out Freddy Freeman and Mookie Bets of the Dodgers. It was a year in which Acuna had a 40-70 season with 41 homers and 73 steals, topping the 40-50 season he had last year. He also lead the league with 149 runs, 217 hits a .416 on base percentage and 383 total bases. He was also named NL player of the month three times. That's impressive.

Special Night North Of The Boarder

Getting drafted into the NHL, or any pro sports league for that matter, is a big deal. Being a late round draft pick won't get you much of a spotlight, but it means that a team is willing to take a chance on you. That's what happened to goalie Matt Tomkins. He was taken 199th overall in 2012 by the Chicago Blackhawks. He had left North American hockey to go play in Europe, because he wasn't getting any bites at the big time. This year, eleven years after getting drafted, he got his chance.,. He then got his first win.

When the season started, he was signed to a two year deal with the Lighting. There wasn't much light as to how much playing time he was going to get at the NHL level. That all changed at the start of training camp when Bolts starter Andrei Vasilevskiy went down with injury. Jonas Johansson, slated to be the backup, became the number one man. Which means that Tomkins was getting his shot to be the backup. He finally got his first taste of NHL action on October 15th, a loss to the Ottawa Senators.

Now, eleven years after he was drafted, Tomkins finally picked up his first career win, a 5-3 win over the Montreal Canadiens on November 7th.

For a guy like this, who has had to fight for every minute of playing time he's gotten, this win has to feel good. Like really good. Its a validation that that 199th overall pick eleven years ago wasn't a total waste. Tomkins stuck with it and finally had a wish come true in winning a game at the highest level of professional hockey. You never forget your first win and I don't think Tomkins will either!

Best & Worst NFL Week Nine

We just crossed a little over two months into the NFL season and we got plenty to talk about. We had a couple of quarterbacks come away with massive days. Same thing can be said for the new coach heading things up for the Raiders. Playing football in New York right now might not be the most fun thing to do. All that and more coming. Here's the best and worst from week nine in the NFL.

Best: C.J Stroud Quarterback Houston Texans
You, son, had yourself a day. Stroud is making a claim for Offensive Rookie of The Year. After getting off to a slow start, Stroud has found his game and in a big way the last few week. last weekend, Houston beat Tampa Bay 39-37 on a massive day from the rookie QB. Stroud went off, going 30 of 42 for 470 yards and five touchdowns. A lot of those yards came in the big moment situations against a decent Bucs defense. And Stroud has looked more comfortable in his game, throwing 14 TDs to just one pick in his last eight games. Yeah its safe to say that Houston may have found their guy.

Worst: New York Football
You know its bad for the teams playing at Melife Stadium when they are the two lowest scoring teams in the NFL. The Giants are last in the NFL in offensive TD's and the Jets are just ahead of them. Both teams got spanked last week. The Jets got whipped on Monday Night Football 27-6 by the Chargers, while the Giants fell to the Raiders 30-6 (more on that game in a second). The Giants are stuck with a third stringer under center and are 2-6, going nowhere fast. The Jets are still in the hunt for a playoff spot in the AFC, but if they don't get the offense figured out, and fast, they too will be on the outside looking in.

Best: Antonio Pierce Head Coach Las Vegas Raiders
We just touched on this game with the Raiders smacking the Giants around, to the tune of a 30-6 Vegas win. For Antonio Pierce this was a huge moment. he had just got promoted to interim Head Coach, and just in time to face his former team. Pierce played for the Giants from 2005 to 2009 winning a Super Bow with them in 2006. The Raiders played mistake free football and went to the ground and pound game with Josh Jacobs to great effectiveness. Oh and the defense forced the Giants into three turnovers. Well laid out gameplan for a first time head coach.

Worst: Bill Belichick Head Coach New England Patriots
It seems like each week, the bar keeps getting lower and lower for coach Bilichick. This time it comes after a 20-17 loss to the Washington Commanders. This time it was bad penalties at the worst time, and the timing seemed off all day for New England. This has been a very underwelming season by the standards that the Patriots had set for themselves over the years. For Coach Belichick, this his 24th season as the head man in New England, it has been one of his roughest. A lot of it falls on the players for not doing thier jobs. But some of it also falls on the coaches for not getting them prepaired as they should be.

Best: Josh Dobbs Quarterback Minnesota Vikings
Talk about stepping right in. First Kirk Cousins goes down with an Achillies injury for the season. Dobbs gets aquired five days ago in a trade with the Cardinals. Then Jaren Hall, who was starting on Sunday, goes down with a concussion early on. Dobbs steps in and does the thing. In a 31-28 Vikings win over the Falcons, Dobbs goes 20 of 30 for 158 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He did the same thing last year too when the Titans picked him up. Now that he had to take over, and got a win, here hoping he can keep it going under center against the Saints this weekend.

Worst: Seattle Seahawks
There had been some glimmer of hope out in Seattle. Some. But the way this season is going that is starting to fade for the Seahawks. Seattle got the tar beaten out of them to the tune of a 37-3 loss to the Ravens. It looked like the Seahawks could have gained some ground in the West cause the 49ers, Cardinals and Rams have all been playing below average football as of late. But what looked like a braekout year last year for Geno Smith has seen the rubber band snap back into his face this year. He threw another pick, giving him 13 in his last 15 games. He couldn't even get his QBR this week over 20. That's bad

Coaching Legend Passes

When it comes to college basketball, there are a lot of big names that have floated around the sport. Most of them come from the coaching ranks. Mike Krzyzewski, Dean Smith, Jim Calhoun, John Wooden usually the names that come to mind right away. So too did Bobby Knight. Knight, who was known as The General, has gone down in the books as one of the greatest to ever coach, has passed away at the age of 83.

Knight started his coaching career during the 1965-66 season coaching at Army. He stayed there till 1971. From Army , it was on to Indiana, where he coached from 1971 until 2000. From there he coached at Texas Tech until his retirement in 2008. When he was finished, he ended with 902 career wins, which was the record at that time. now that win total sits 6th on the all time list, behind Roy Williams,  Jim Calhoun, Bob Huggins, Jim Boehim and Coach K (who played under Knight at Army). Knight won twenty or more games in a season 29 times in his coaching career, and won three national titles at Indiana along with an Olympic gold in 1984. A number of Knight's assistant coaches, players, and managers have gone on to be coaches. In the college ranks, this includes Hall of Fame Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, Steve Alford, Murry Bartow, Dan Dakich, Bob Donewald, Marty Simmons, Jim Crews, and Chris Beard. NBA coaches that came from under Bobby Knight include Randy Wittman, Mike Woodson, Keith Smart, Isiah Thomas, and Lawrence Frank.

His coaching style was legendary, as were his outbursts. Everybody remembers the chair toss against Perdue. Same goes with what got him outed at Indiana in 2000 by grabbing the arm of a freshman player. Then their was the choking of Neil Reed at a practice in 1997. That fiery temperament that made him so successful also got him into some hot water as well, some of which we just touched on.

Sure there were moments where Bobby temper got the better of him, but he knew how to get the best out of the players he had. That's what made him so good is that he was brash but he was also able to get the best out of his players and lead them to victory.

One of the greatest to ever step foot on a bench, Bobby Knight!

Best & Worst NFL Week Eight

Week Eight has come and gone in the NFL and what a week it was. We saw almost half the quarterbacks in the league replaced due to either poor performance or injury. We had running backs hit high water marks and some receivers having a huge day. Here's some of the best and worst of week eight around the NFL.

Best: Kayvon Thibodeaux Defensive End New York Giants
Sure the Giants lost 13-10 in Overtime to the Jets (more on this game in a second), but Thibodeaux was one of the bright spots in this game. He was a monster on the Giants defensive line. He finished with nine total tackles, three of which were for a sack. He also forced one fumble on the day as well. It was one of those really make a name for yourself kind of day.

Worst: New York Football Fans
Having written what I just wrote was really the only positive to come out of Sundays 13-10 overtime win by the Jets over the Giants. Neither team was good on Sunday. At all. The only thing that was really exciting about that game was the end of regulation and most of overtime. That's about it. it was just a day of bad football at Metlife Stadium in a bad football game. The Giants threw for -9 yards on the day and the two punters combined for 24 punts on the day. Yikes!

Best: Will Levis Quarterback Tennessee Titans
Aside from the fact that the Titans walked away with a 28-23 win over Atlanta, the quarterback play is a pretty big story here. Will Levis got his first career start for the Titans, and did he make the most of it. As a team, the Titans had thrown for just two touchdown passes all season. Levis hit that total in the first half alone. He finished the day with four touchdowns, going 19 of 29 for 238 yards. Three of those tosses went to DeAndre Hopkins, who finished with 128 receiving yards. He had been quite most of the year too, but it now seems there's something cooking with Levis under center and it seems to be working.

Worst: Cleveland Browns
Cleveland had a chance late to hold a lead and draw closer to the Ravens. They weren't able to hang onto it against the Seahawks, falling to Seattle 24-20. All it took was one bad pass to turn the tide around. PJ Walker saw a pass get tipped near the line that was picked off by Jamal Adams. A few minutes later Seattle Wide Receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba caught the go ahead score to give the Seahawks the lead for good. For as well as the Browns have played at times this season, it still seams like they can't really buy a break.

Best: Rashid Shaheed Wide Receiver New Orleans Saints
New Orleans walked away with a 38-27 win over the Colts and this guy was a big reason for it. He had three catches the entire day. No that isn't a typo, he actually had three catches the entire afternoon. But what stuck out was that those three catches went for 153 yards and a touchdown. The second year wide out just had to have the ball chucked in his general direction by Derek Carr and he was gonna grab it. He's averaging 16 yards a catch so far in his career. This performance against the Colts looked a lot like what Randy Moss did against Dallas on Thanksgiving in 1998.

Worst: Brock Purdy Quarterback San Francisco 49ers
Yes Brock Purdy threw for 365 yards and a touchdown on Sunday. but he also got picked off twice, got  sacked twice and fumbled one in the Niners 31-17 loss to the Bengals. In the first five games of the season, all wins, Purdy was good at ball control. The last three games, all losses, not so much. Sure there's no Debo Samuel or Trent Williams in the lineup for the 49ers due to injury, but that's not an excuse. Purdy hasn't been able to really protect the ball the last three games for the 49ers and its biting them in the butt. If he doesn't get it together, and fast, the playoff window for San Francisco this season is going to fade to almost nothing.

NBA Star Moved

Fear the beard, because its on the move again. James Harden, the disgruntled 76ers star, has wanted to be moved since June. He finally got his wish. Harden is now heading to LA to play with the Clippers and old running buddy Russell Westbrook.

According to ESPN, the full trade is as follows: The 76ers sent Harden, P.J. Tucker and Filip Petrusev to the Clippers for Marcus Morris, Robert Covington, Nic Batum, KJ Martin, a 2028 unprotected first-round pick, two second-round picks, a 2029 pick swap and an additional first-round pick from the Oklahoma City Thunder, sources told ESPN. The Clippers are sending a 2027 first-round pick swap to Oklahoma City, clearing the way for the Thunder to move a protected 2026 first-round pick to the 76ers, sources said. The Clippers are sending a 2024 and a 2029 second-round pick to the Sixers in the deal too, sources said. Also, the Sixers will waive veteran guard Danny Green to create the roster space for the trade.

You want to talk about trying to get a super team to win a title, the Clippers are looking that way. Adding Harden in with Westbrook, Paul George and Kawhi Leonard. SO it works out for both sides. Harden gets to play on a team this talented for a shot at a title. Meanwhile the Sixers get draft capital and gives them space to go after a high talent guard to play with Tyrese Maxey and stud Joel Embiid.

Harden wanted out of Philly because he wasn't happy with the Sixers GM and upper management. That seems to become a recurring theme. Harden seemed to get moved around quite a bit because of either low ball contract offers (according to him) or he's unhappy with management. I get that players become unhappy with upper management, that happens in any aspect of life.

Harden it seems, if he isn't happy he complains and whines till he gets out of whatever bad situation, in his mind, he's in. He wasn't happy with Philly he wanted out and he got it. Feels like the same thing happened when he was with the Nets too. So Harden now out in Philly and is headed to a good team in LA to try and win a title.

Best & Worst NFL Week Seven

Week seven brought on some pretty big performances, one of which was the Sunday night game. teams dominated through the air, as only one guy in the league ran for over a hundred yards during the week's action. We had one QB have a massive week, while another one looks like its starting to fall apart around him. So lets not hold on any longer. Here's some of the best, and worst, from week seven in the NFL.

Best: Patrick Mahomes Quarterback Kansas City Chiefs
Everybody knows that this guy is the best at what he does. He showed it again Sunday in a Kansas City 31-17 win over the Chargers. You know you were having yourself a day when you had over 300 yards passing by the time you hit the half. Mahomes finished 32 of 42 for 424 yards and four touchdowns. He went to his favorite target in Travice Kelce a lot, who had 12 catches for  179 yards by himself. Those two guys had themselves a day and picked apart that Chargers defense like it was nothing. If there had been some doubts about the Kansas City game, they were put to rest on this day.

Worst: Jordan Love, Quarterback Green Bay Packers
When you take over under center in Green Bay, there's always going to be very high expectations put on your shoulders. Jordan Love has had a little trouble adjusting to those expectations and its starting to show. For the first month of the season, Jordan was keeping packers in games. Now the Packers are losing games because of his bad play. Throwing seven picks in the last four games, including one in a 19-17 loss to the Broncos in Denver. That pick he threw killed whatever rally Green Bay was trying to kickstart against Denver. It also showed lack of awareness on Love's part for when he made the heave.

Best: Myles Garrett, Defensive End Cleveland Browns
It's a rarity in today's game that you really see a defensive player be the sole reason why his team won a game. That's exactly what happened with Myles Garrett, as he lead the Browns to a 39-38 win over the Colts. Garrett collected nine tackles, two sacks, trip sacks at that. One of those sacks was recovered in the end zone for a score. He also had one tackle for loss, one pass defended, four quarterback pressures and a blocked field goal. That block in turn led to Cleveland points, via a field goal. He was all over the field, creating havoc for the Colts, who had no real way to be able to defend him. That was one of the more dominating performances seen in a long time.

Worst: Brett Maher, Kicker Los Angeles Rams
Think this is the first time in quite a long time I've put a kicker on the list. But with the way Maher was king on Sunday against the Steelers, it worth putting on the list. Pittsburgh walked away with a 24-17 win over the Rams, and that could be a very different outcome had Maher been more on point. He missed not only an extra point, but two critical field goals as well. Sure he made 16 field goals coming into the week, which was tied for 2nd in the league. But when the day was done, the misses dropped his kicking percentage to 74% the worst in the NFL this year.

Best: Tyson Bagent Quarterback Chicago Bears
Without a doubt one of the more surprising names I've ever written out in the time I been doing these lists. Bagent comes in an undrafted rookie out of a D2 school at Sheppard. He steps in for Justin Fields and leads the Bears to a 30-12 win over the Raiders at home. A lot of pressure going onto this kid making his first NFL start. All in all, it was a solid first start, going 212 of 29 for 162 yards and a touchdown. He also contributed 24 more yards on the ground and helped the Bears throw in a bit of a running attack as well. it was a good day of ball control that the Bears haven't seen in a while this season.

Worst: Daniel Jones Quarterback New York Giants
Kind of feel bad putting Jones on this list, given that he's out with a neck injury. But the Giants are coming off a 14-7 win over the Commanders, and well let's be honest here, they have looked better in the two starts with Tyrod Taylor under center then they have with Jones as the starter this season. Taylor hit Darren Waller for a touchdown pass for the first of his two TD's on the day. That TD pass was the first home touchdown New York has had all season, as well as the team's first offensive one since Week 3 and the first first-half touchdown all year. If this keeps up with Tyrod under center, Jones may not see the end of that contract he signed with the Giants.

Best & Worst NFL Week Six

We are now through six weeks of the NFL season and we already got a lot going on. We got one winless team left in the Carolina Panthers. Meanwhile the two teams that went unbeaten to this point, San Francisco and Philadelphia, are unbeaten no more. Running games and defense was the stories to take away from week six, so lets not waste more time and dive right into it. Here's some of the best, and worst, from week six in the NFL.

Best: New York Jets Defense
You want to talk about bigtime performances, look no further then what the Jets defense did against the unbeaten, at the time, Eagles. Philly isn't unbeaten anymore, as the Jets walked away with a 20-14 victory. New York's offense had done just enough to get the job done, but it was the defense that was the star of the day. They forced four eagles turnovers, including a huge pick late in the game that led to the Jets go ahead touchdown at the end of the day. Now, after the way the Jets started the season with Rogers getting hurt, there wasn't much hope. After this win, they go into the bye week as a .500 football team, which I didn't think I would be saying with the way things got started.

Worst: Carolina Panthers Offense
Things just seem to keep getting worse for Carolina, who are the only winless team left in the NFL this season. This comes after getting spanked to the tune of a 42-21 drubbing at the hands of the Dolphins. For one thing, Morstert on Miami had more rush yards by himself then the Panthers did as a team. Stroud was sacked 4 times and the Panther pass attack had 188 total yards through the air. This leads to head coach Frank Reich saying that he's going to actually had offensive play calling off to his offensive coordinator Thomas Brown. Maybe, just maybe, this will give the Panthers offense the kick right square in the ass it needs to get going. Because it was horrible against Miami,

Best: Kyren Williams Running Back Los Angeles Rams
Los Angeles seemed to find part of its game again on Sunday, in a 26-9 win over the Cardinals. Williams was a huge part of that with a big game on the ground on Sunday, He was one of two backs with over a hundred yards on the ground (Mostert of Miami was the other one). Williams finished with 20 carries for 158 yards and a touchdown. It's performances like this that prove that there can still be good runners on any given week and there is a pretty big place in the game for the running game and teams need to start getting back to it more

Worst: Gardner Minshew Quarterback Indianapolis Colts
With Anthony Richardson out with injury, Gardner had a chance to step up and take hold of this job. And it was against his old team in Jacksonville no less. But it didn't go the way anybody expected. Jacksonville walked away with a 37-20 win. Yes Minshew threw for 329 yards on the day, but only completed 33 of the 55 passes he threw. Oh and he had three ugly picks on the day too. Not a good way for Gardner to get back under center in this league. But with Richardson down for what looks like the year, its Gardners team and he's going to have to get this thing figured out.

Best: Jim Schwartz Defensive Coordinator Cleveland Browns
Another case of a great defense knocking off a previously unbeaten team. Cleveland pulled off a huge upset, beating the 49ers 19-17 thanks in large part to what Jim Schwartz dialed up against the Niners. It didn't help San Francisco that they lost McCaffery to injury early on. But the Browns defense put all kinds of pressure on Brock Purdy on the day, and you could see it was driving him nuts. Cleveland was throwing its collective weight around late and the Niners had no answer. Now Cleveland isn't going to be a contending team in the same vain as say a Buffalo or Kansas City in the AFC, but with how well there defense can play, it will keep them in a lot of games.

Worst: New York Giants Pass Game
Its tough enough going up a very good Buffalo Bills team. Its even tougher when its not Daniel Jones, but rather Tyrod Taylor under center for the night. Buffalo walked away with a 14-9 win in a game that really shouldn't have been that close. Buffalo looked bad all night too, but the Giants offense was even worse. Against a depleted Bills defense, this should have been a runaway, with Saquan Barkley back in there for the Giants too. But the pass game didn't do much of anything. Sure Taylor threw for 200 yards but it wasn't anything meaningful. They went 0 for 5 in trips to the redzone on the night. How much more embarrassing can you get if your the Giants?

Injury Bug Bites Bolts

We're a little over a week into the hockey season, and already it seems like injuries are starting to pile up. Tampa has been off to a rough start, going 1-2-1 through the first four games, and have played the last couple of games without team captain Steven Stamkos, which has lead to a sense of urgency from the team.

Last night, the got a point, coming back late to tie the game in the 3rd (Thank you Brandon Hagel) before falling to the Buffalo Sabres in overtime. It closed out a road trip which saw the Bolts lose all three games, getting only one point on the trip. Coach Cooper had expressed it in the media before last night's game that this is a little bit of an urgent time for the Bolts.

The trip was a bit of a bust and not having Stamkos for the last two games shows that there's a few holes in Tampa lineup without their Captain. Couple that with having Tyler Motte and Andrei Vasilevskiy being out as well, its getting a little tougher out of the block for the Lightning.

Yes, its early in the season I'm aware. It's only four games in. But should we really be hitting the panic button now? Not as fast as people are thinking. The lightning have been in this boat before. They've had it happen where they've had to deal with injuries to big time players and they've been able to get it together in time to make it not only to the playoffs but to go on deep playoff runs. SO it is possible to overcome these things.

Sure that three game road trip it didn't look good. The last two looked bad without Stamkos in the lineup. With him out, there are guys starting to step up. Hagel had the big goal last night to get it to overtime in the first place. Things do look rough right now, but that is a silver lining to all of this. There are guys here in Tampa who can step up when called upon. They still have their big guns in Hedman Point and Kucherov.

Just hang on, this team will make it through the storm and come out on the positive side of things.

Best & Worst NFL Week Five

We are almost a third of the way through the NFL season and what a roller coaster it has been. Jacksonville seems to play better on the other side of the pond then they do over here. One team in the New York Metro area found its game again, at least for one week. That being said, here's some of the best and worst from week five in the NFL

Best: Breece Hall, Running Back New York Jets
Yes, I know its against a bad Broncos team, but a win is a win. And Breece had himself a redemption day of sorts. See it was week seven last year against the Broncos where Hall hurt his knee and missed the remainder of the season. Now he shown that the knee seems just fine. Hall helped power the Jets to a 31-21 win in Denver, as he had 22 carries for a league best 177 yards. Seventy Two of those yards came on a long run late in the first half. He has shown that the knee feels and runs just fine. If the Jets can keep using more of him and Dalvin Cook as the season goes along, maybe it will take the pressure off of Zach Wilson and he can perform to the level the Jets need him to if they hope to make the playoffs.

Worst: Mike McCarthy Head Coach Dallas Cowboys
You want to talk about some poor decision making, look no further then what McCarthy did against the 49ers. Dallas got un out of the building by the 49ers, to the tune of a 42-10 loss. That 42 points Dallas gave up Sunday was more then they had in the first month of the season combined, which is scary to think about. A lot of it came down to play calling against the 49ers and that falls on coach McCarthy. Dak threw three picks, not McCarthy fault, Dak threw the ball, but maybe better play designs wouldn't have seen Dak make those bad plays. McCarthy said he wanted to run the ball against the 49ers, but Dallas as a team had only 19 carries. That theory went right out the window. This play calling goes right to the coach, who rightfully should take the blame for this loss with his own bad decision making.

Best: Pittsburgh Steelers Defense
When we talk about the Steelers winning football games as of late, it seems like it's been their defense that has been getting them through it rather than the offense. Nothing against the Steelers offense, but it was there defense that stood tall against the Ravens this weekend in a 17-10 victory. Pittsburgh had been driving the Ravens wide outs nuts all day, forcing dropped passes along the way. But what really stuck out for the Steelers was the fact that they forced two Ravens turnovers in the final six minutes of regulation, which lead to ten Steelers points and a win.

Worst: Mac Jones Quarterback England Patriots
Feel like I'm starting to sound like a bit of a broken record here with Mac Jones. Yes I know taking over for Tom Brady in New England was going to be a very tall task, and Mac Jones hasn't lived up to the task Not only did the Patriots get routed by the Saints 34-0, but Jones was making bad decisions with the football. He threw a pick six to Tyrann Mathieu, his 3rd pick six this season and second in as many games. To be fair here, this isn't totally on Mac Jones. Yes he the one throwing the ball, that's true. But some of this has to fall on his head coach, who hasn't exactly been able to surround his quarterback with what he needs to take this Patriots club to another level again. Its really the fault of both player and coach here.

Best: Desmond Ridder Quarterback Atlanta Falcons
Atlanta managed to walk away with a 21-19 win over the Texans, and a lot of that was the play of Desmond Ridder. He played a pretty good game going 28 of 37 for 329 yards and a touchdown. he played a clean game too, meaning he wasn't picked off and he wasn't sacked, shout out to the Falcons line for keeping him upright. He also started showing hook ups to Kyle Pitts and Drake Landon, both of whom have took a little while to find a groove with Ridder, which it looks like they finally have.

Worst: Bryce Young Quarterback Carolina Panthers
Sure there's a lot of pressure surrounding a player taken first overall in the draft, there's a lot of hype surrounding him. So far, Young has done a serviceable job handling it. That was until Sunday. In a bad 42-24 loss to the Lions (who are still one of the best teams in football, not to take anything away from Detroit), Young looked like he took a step back in his development at the NFL level. yes he threw for 247 yards and three touchdowns, but threw two very costly picks that led to Detroit scoring drives. He still hasn't seemed like he's gotten comfortable at this level yet and it's a big reason why the Panthers are still winless on the season.

2023-24 NHL Season Preview

The time has arrived. Four months of waiting has come to an end. Thirty Two teams. An eighty two game regular season for each of them. It is here and now the 2023-24 National Hockey League season is upon us. Vegas is the defending champs, hoping to be able to keep the Cup out west. Boston is looking to bounce back after having egg on their face from what happened in the opening round last year. Can Toronto build off last years first round win? Can Florida continue its success with a repeat trip to the finals? All those questions and more will be answered in the coming months.

Right now lets dive right into it. Here's how we see the 202324 NHL Season playing out.

Western Conference:
Central Division:
1. Dallas Stars 112 Points*
2. Colorado Avalance 109 Points*
3. Nashville Predators 100 Points*
4. Minnesota Wild 95 Points*
5. St Louis Blues 90 Points
6. Winnipeg Jets 84 Points
7. Chicago Blackhawks 80 Points
8. Arizona Coyotes 78 Points

Coming off a 2nd place finish in the division last year, the Stars take their game to the next level this year and reach even higher than the year before. Yes Jamie Benn is slowing down, but that's coming with age. Matt Duchene and Craig Smith have been brought in to add more depth. This is going to be in support of the guy who had his breakout year last year In Jason Robertson, who is expected to have another big year again this year. Expect another good year out of Ottinger in net two. Now we have the Avalanche, who are going to have no problem keeping pace with Dallas most of the year. it will be a little tough without their captain Gabe Landeskog in the lineup due to injury. But there's still plenty of talent on this team to keep them in pace. Druin was brought in to get top line minutes with their two best players in MacKinnion and Rantanen. With Makar and Towes healthy this blue line can be good. And there's hope with Georgiev playing as well as he did last year, the Avs will be just fine. Now we go to the Predators, with a new coach and GM in place things could be good for the Preds this year. The netminders are good with Saros leading the charge, and Josi and McDonagh at the front of the blue line the defense can look good. Ryan O'Reilly was brought in to solidify the center position, which he is more than able to do. There are still a few things brewing with the Wild in terms of heading in the right direction. They got a solid goaltending tandom in Fleury and Gustavsson. The blue line is well built up and down with Spurgon leading that group. Krill Kaprizocv is going to have another mosnter year this year, leading a fairly well balanced attack. Depth here might keep them a little bit back from reaching a playoff spot but its going to be close in Minnesota

Shifting more west, we have the Blues who pose an interesting bunch. They have a balanced scoring attack, leadu by Jordan Kyru and Brayden Schenn. What is holding this offense back is they don't really have a true game breaker yet in their lineup that's going to stick with the top teams ahead of them in the standings. The defensive core is all north of 30 years old. Still good yes but not getting any younger. And Jordan Binnington is solid in net, but there is question marks behind him. Moving further North, we have the Jets, who are still looking to build on last year but it doesn't seem like it could be there this year. They are still solid in net with one of the best in the game in Connor Hellebyuck manning the pipes. Socring has punch with Connor and Scheifele, but again it comes down to lack of depth and well rounded scoring from this club. The blue line could be decent, but its not up to snuff compared to the rest of the division. We now have a new era coming in with the Blackhawks. The Connor Bedard era has begun. He is without a doubt the brightest star on a team that's going to be in rebuild for quite some time. On paper there's no depth around him yet to make them even close to becoming a contending club. Finally, rounding out this division nis the Coyotes. You have offensive hope with Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz. Goaltending and defense are huge question marks out in Arizona, which is going to result in another last place finish.

Pacific Division
1. Edmonton Oilers 110 Points*
2. Vegas Golden Knights 108 Points*
3. Los Angeles Kings 105 Points*
4. Seattle Kraken 100 Points*
5. Calgary Flames 93 Points
6. Vancouver Canucks 89 Points
7. San Jose Sharks 79 Points
8. Anaheim Ducks 75 Points

Things are looking pretty good for the Oilers right about now. You have two of the top offensive players on earth with McDavid and Draisitil. There's plenty of depth scoring to complement those two guys. Defense is solid and look for Stewart Skinner to have a bigger year between the pipes this season.  Seems like the Oilers are right there to take the next step in the West. Behind them are the defending Cup champions the Golden Knights. Logan Thompson and Aidin Hill are going to be splitting the load in net, but Hill is going to try and build off his successful run in the playoffs. Helping keep the puck out of the net is Alec Martinez and Alex Pietrangelo. And then there's the scoring punch lead by Jack Eichel and Jonathan Marchessault. Now this might not be as powerful at the top as what you got in Edmaonton, but its good enough for them to be a major force in the West again this season. Now you have a team coming on their tails in the form of the Kings. Cam Talbot now really has a chance to put his stamp on the LA crease. A place of question is depth on the blueline behind Drew Doughty, who isn't getting any younger. Neither is their top forward in Anze Kopitar. They have a nice complement behind him in Fiala, Dubis, and Kempe. It may not be enough to really challenge the top two dogs in this division, but it will be more than enough to get them where they want to go. Right on their heels are going to be the Kraken. They are going to build off last season success in getting into the playoffs. Grubauer is going to be counted on again to take the lion share in net, and he will do just fine with that work load. Then you have Schultz and Dunn leading things on the blueline which looks like it could be solid again. Scoring still shows a little lack of depth. Benniers and McCann will carry things again for this team but there isn't enough, while it is good, to really be able to hang with the top three.

The Flames are going to hang around a bit in this race, but fade near the end cause of lack of depth. There is hope in net that Jacob Markstrom can keep them in a lot of games. Noah Hanafin was brought in to bolster that blueline which has potential to be solid. Its scoring that could hold Calgary back a little this year. Huberdeau didn't have as good a year his first year in Calgary coming over in trade, so look for him to have a bounce back season this year. Still there isn't much depth here with this team to really have them near the top of the heap in this division. There's a little more high hopes for the Canucks this year to take steps upward in this division. There's an interesting one-two punch in net with Demko and bringing in DeSmith. Love Hughes leading the charge from the back end, but there's a little lack of depth behind him to build around. Up front, you got two stars there in Pettersson and JT Miller. You also got a budding star in Kuzmenko who can take his game to an even higher level this year too. Still not enough to draw the Canucks back up to contender just yet. Now as for the Sharks, that is going to be in a rebuild mode if I ever saw one. Goaltending is below par in the Bay. Defense same thing. There's a glimpse of hope with offense, if they can stay healthy, With Couture and Hertl, that's a good start. Nothing behind it. Things get worse for the Ducks when it comes to finding a foothold here in this division. Killorn was brought in during the offseason, but he got hurt in camp and will miss time. John Gibson didn't look the same last year in net. Fowler still the leader on the blue line but there's not much help for him there. There's talent with Zegras and Terry up front and a bit of a slow build for a supporting cast, but Anaheim appears to be heading in the right direction.

Eastern Conference
Atlantic Division
1. Toronto Maple Leafs 110 Points*
2. Florida Panthers 107 Points*
3. Boston Bruins 102 Points*
4. Tampa Bay Lightning 99 Points*
5. Buffalo Sabres 97 Points
6. Ottawa Senators 87 Points
7. Detroit Red Wings 80 Points
8. Montreal Canadiens 70 Points

Things starting to head in the right direction for the Maple Leafs last season, winning a playoff round for the first time in twenty years. What really worries me, and has for a long time with this team, is the problem in net. Samsonov and Wall have been good and will be this year, but they need to get it done come spring time. Same thing with the blue line. Morgan is going to be relied upon a lot to play big minutes. There's no denying that with Tavares, Mattehws, Marner and Nylander leading the charge up front, that this team can score. Question is can they really put it all together when it matters most come spring? We know one team that did, the defending conference champs the Panthers. Matthew Tkachuk had himself a massive year for Florida leading that charge and will be counted on to do it again this season. Barkov, Reinhart and Verhaeghe are going to be counted on to support their offensive star it Tkachuk. Ekblad is hurt to begin the year, but Ekman-Larosn and Kulikov should be fine holding the fort down till he comes back healthy. And of course Bobrovsky will again be carrying the load between the pipes. Following them up will be the Bruins, who are taking a step back after their Presidents Trophy, record setting season last year. Bergeron is gone, and Marchand is taking over as captain of this good club. They won't be able to replicate last season's success, but they still have a talented group with Pastrnak leading the offensive charge. They brought back in some veteran leadership with Lucic and JVR into the mix. On the blueline, MacAvoy and Grizlik bring plenty to the table. Between the pipes is Ullmark, who's coming off his Vezina season and a young and hungry Swayman. There still a good group here, just not quite as good as last year. Now we move on to the Lightning, who are very much still in the mix. It going to hurt not having Andrei Vasilevskiy between the pipes from the start, as he gonna miss two months following back surgery. Jonas Johansson going to have to carry the load till Vasey gets healthy and can take the job back. Victor Hedman looks like his old self in camp, after having what was a down year by his standards a season ago. He going to be counted on to take a bulk of the work on a solid blueline. Losing Alex Killorn over the summer hurt, but the core up front with Stamkos Point and Kucherov has this team looking like they going to be in the mix. Bottom six are going to have to step up if the Bolts hope for a long run in the playoffs.

First team on the outside looking in is going to be the Sabres. They just missed out on the post season a year ago. With a good offensive core led by Tage Thompson, Buffalo has something to really pull for. With him, Tuch, Cozens, Dahlin on the back line, there's hope in Western New York. Only thing that is going to hold Buffalo back is in goal. It looks like Comrie and Levi are the go to tandom in net. If Buffalo wants any shot at the playoff hockey, one of these two is going to have to take hold of the starting job and really run with it. Right behind them are going to be the Senators, who have the exact same problem. Korpisalo isn't a true number one goalie and Forsberg can't take the job straight away from him. Top defense pair of Chabot and Chychrun are pretty good but the bottom four doesn't leave much room. Same goes for the forwards. Top line of Giroux, Stutzle and Tkachuk are going to be good this year. Tarasenko was brought in on a one year deal and should proved some spark, but they aren't quite at the level they need to be at just yet. Now we got the Red Wings, who are still in the process of rebuilding, but its getting made in the right direction. Husso is going to be healthy and should take the bulk of the load between the pipes. There something to build around with Seider on the back line, along with Gostisbehere and Petry. Adding more depth up front by bringing in DeBrincat was huge for this team. They got talent with Larkin and Raymond. Its going to be a little ways away still but its going in the right direction. Finally there's the Canadiens. Sure Nick Suzuki is their best forward, but there's not much to really be able to build around him. The blue line still needs work and so does goaltending.

Metropolitan Division
1. Carolina Hurricanes 111 Points*
2. New Jersey Devils 110 Points*
3. New York Rangers 108 Points*
4. Pittsburgh Penguins 105 Points*
5. New York Islanders 98 Points
6. Washington Capitals 92 Points
7. Columbus Blue Jackets 86 Points
8. Philadelphia Flyers 80 Points

Another year, another division crown for the Hurricanes, who seem to just keep getting better. It stings at the start of the season for the Canes having Andrei Svenchnikov being out with injury, but this team is still deep enough to go on a deep run. Last year it was injuries catching up to them late that cost them in the conference finals. A healthy Freddy Andersen could be huge again in the Carolina net. There a good mix of youth and vets on the blue line. Scoring punch is going to be solid again this season, with Aho and Necas leading the way with Andrei missing time. This team is deep and gonna be good for a long time. Right behind them are the Devils, who are looking to build off a very strong season a year ago. Vanacek is the number one man in the Jersey nets, but with the way Schmid played in the playoffs that could lead to a good problem for the Devils to have. Hamilton and Segenthaler lead the defense corp, who have high expectation for Luke Hughes on the back end. Him along with his brother Jack are expected to carry this team for a long time. Jack Hughes is going to look to build off his outstanding performance a season ago and lead this team to the promise land, and adding in a talent like Tyler Toffoli to a loaded team makes the Devils that much better. The Rangers are a team that took a step backwards a season ago, but this year they will be right back in the thick of it in the Metro. Igor Shesterkin is expected to once again carry the load in the nets on Broadway, a task he has no problem handling. Truba, Fox and Miller are going to take the lead for this young and hungry defense group. Scoring should hold up fairly well with Panarin and Zibanejad doing what they do best and Kappo Kako building on his numbers from a year ago. The wild card here in this division is going to be a rebuilt Penguins team. Last season was the first one in which Pittsburgh had missed the playoffs since 2006. This year they get back. They added Erik Karlsson to the blue line, who's coming in off of a monster season last year. He joins a good but slightly older defensive group. They still have a good offensive group with Crosby, Malkin, Rust and Guentzel but they aren't getting much younger. The one thing that could keep the Pens on the fence for a playoff spot this season is in net. Can Jarry be the guy to take them there?

As for the Islanders, they were a playoff team a season ago but can they get back there again? No problem to worry about in net with Sorokin and Varlamov manning the cage. The blue line is lead by Pullock and Pelech and looks to be solid. What leaves me a little worried is scoring. Horvat and Barzal had some magic together, but they went a little out of wack when Barzal got hurt near the end of last season> Nelson should also have another solid year producing. But what has one worried about this team is whether or not there's the scoring depth to be able to get this team not only into the playoffs but on a deep run again. If you look for a team that's had a fall from grace of sorts, its going to be the Capitals. At this point in his career, there's so few milestones for Alex Ovechkin to really reach, but he got his sights set on a few this year and could get close to Gretzky records. There still Oshie, Backstrom and Kuznetsov to help Ovie with the scoring which will keep them out of the playoffs. That and lack of goaltending. Kumper is good but not good enough to help them reach the playoffs. Then we have the Blue Jackets, who are still a ways away but are taking steps in the right direction. Johnny Hockey is starting to live up to his contract and with Laine on the line with him, its something to build around. They added more depth pieces to be excited about with Adam Fantilli drafted and Cole Sillinger developing for another season. If either Merslinkins or Spencer Martin can take over the number one job the Jackets could surprise people. Finally, there the Flyers who don't have much hope. You have Owen Tippet and Morgan Frost to be able to build around but there a ways away from getting to the promise land.
