Ace In The Hole

Coming into this season, there was a lot of hype surrounding the New York Mets, as there should have been. It was  at the top of the pitching staff. They already had two time Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom set at the top. Then they brought in Max Scherzer on a two year deal. It made for one of the most lethal one two punches at the top of a rotation ever. That fire was put out for a spell, with deGrom having shoulder issues during training camp and missing the start of the season.

Well now the wait is finally over, as deGrom is back at the top of the staff with Mad Max.

New York announced late last week that deGrom makes his season debut this upcoming week. His first scheduled start back in the rotation  is this Tuesday night, a 7:05 start in Washington against the Nationals. This will be coming a day after Max Scherzer starts against those same Nationals. The one two punch will be in effect starting the beginning of next week. The vibe around the team is positive with Jake coming back. He, along with Pete Alonso, are the faces of this Mets team. And getting him back is a big boost to anlready solid pitching staff.

It seems like it always happens once a generation if you will with the Mets having that dominating, face of the franchise pitcher on the staff. First it was Seaver, then it was Doc, and now its Jake. With him and Mad Max here, its a one two punch that the Mets haven't seen since Sever and Koosman.

Sure there's more that's going to have to fall into place for the Mets to really go deep into a playoff run this season, but getting Jake back into the rotation is a huge plus for a team that's already good. There is one thing I realized, as I'm writing this. How impactful is Jake going to be? I'm not really expecting to be at his full dominating self that us Mets fans have come to have the pleasure of watching right out of the gate. It's going to take a little bit of time for deGrom to find that stride of his game again. If all goes right, we could get that version of Jake back by the time the playoffs roll around in October.

Now I'm sure the Mets coaching staff is going to be keeping a very close watch on Jake his first few outings with him just getting back into the swing of things at this level. But just having the thought of a returning Jake and paired up with Scherzer doing what he's been doing this season, it brings big smiles and even a few tears to Mets fans eyes.

Camp Stories

Oh the sounds of shoulder pads smacking have returned. We are a little over a month away from the start of the 2022 NFL season and training camps are starting to open up. There's going to be plenty to talk about league wide with camps here. New coaches. New faces in new places. New systems for teams to learn. And a lot more questions to go around the league as teams get ready for the regular season to open up. Since there was three teams that we really focused on here on the show last season, the Jets, the Giants and the Bucs. We will keep that focus again this season, along with the big stories around the league of course. So with camps here, lets take a look at some of the storylines to watch with the teams we cover here.

New York Jets

Its the second year for both head coach Robert Salah and quarterback Zach Wilson, both of whom are trying to figure put the system and speed at this level. It going to be interesting to see how well both can work with each other and how Salah can get Wilson ready in a system that best fits his abilities and gives the team the best chance to win.

There's also Denzel Mims. The former second round pick has had trouble adjusting to the game at the NFL level and hasn't really taken that next step. There's rumors floating around that Mims could possibly be traded during camp so its something to keep an eye on. He isn't more than 4th on depth chart among big targets for the Jets and isn't used on special teams. So look for the team to make a move with him. Then there the running back battle to see if Breece Hall can take away the work load of carrying the ball from Michael Carter. There's hope amongst the team that, in due time, Hall will eventually become the feature back on this team.

New York Giants

Then there's the stories brewing with the Giants. Wide receiver is a big playemaker spot in the NFL and the Giants have three pretty good ones in Kenny Golladay, Kadarius Toney, and Sterling Shepard. What's at issue here is that all three guys are coming off injuries last season. They need one, or even two, to really show during camp that they can step up and be that bigtime playmaker in the Giants passing attack this season. And coming into this years camp, Tooney has the biggest hill to climb of sorts. He showed flashes against both Dallas and New Orleans that he can be an impact player on this team. Now, if he's fully healthy, can he keep those flashes all year round going.

The biggest addition coming into camp is Evan Neal, the right tackle who was picked 7th overall out of Alabama. If he can transition smoothly to the speed of this game at this level, then the Giants game can be taken even higher with a solid line. Its something that Big Blue has been trying to improve on for quite some time now and having him in the mix could be a very good thing.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

\Well that didn't last long. It only last 40 days for life without Tom Brady here in Tampa. Brady's back for another go around with the Bucs. Weapons around Brady have changed a bit this year. no Brown, although he's been replaced on paper by Julio Jones on a one year deal. Biggest one is no Gronk, who retired during the offseason. Then there's Chris Godwin coming off offseason knee surgery and Leonard Fournette showed up to mini camp a little out of shape.

Trying to replace the Gronk effect is Kyle Rudolph, who's here on a one year deal, and working him in with Cameron Brate MIGHT be enough to fill most of the void left with Gronk retiring. And, on the other side of the football, Jason Pierre-Paul isn't on the line. He hasn't retired at all (at least not as of this writing), but he hasn't been signed yet either. So to replace him, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka has been brought on board to try and fill that gap.

There's a lot to take in as camps are getting under way and as time goes on between now and the start of the season the pictures for teams will become much clearer.

Hello Old Friend

Hello old friend, its nice to see you again. Rivalry's are a great thing, especially in state rivals. Well in New York, we've got them in all four major sports. The next two days will highlight the baseball one as the Subway Series gets underway in Queens. Its the Mets and the Yankees for the first of two series this season. This Subway Series has a more special feel to it coming into this one.

The first thing that really sticks out about this edition of the Subway Series is the fact that, for the first time in the history of this series, that both teams are on top of their respective divisions.  The Yankees have a 12.5 game lead over 2nd place Toronto, while the Mets are up two games on 2nd place Atlanta going into tonight's matchup. Pretty good pitching matchups for both games in this series. Walker takes on Montgomery tonight, while tomorrow will see Scherzer square off with German. The Bronx Bombers have dominated the all time series, but its actually closer between the teams in Queens then it is when the games are played in the Bronx.

That's not all that's sticking out about the matchups. Both teams have solid pitching staffs and both are hitting fairly well at the moment. This is the first time really in quite some time that we've had both the Mets and Yankees playing this good of baseball at this time of the year. Both teams have been playing above the norm in the league this year. The Yankees have been running away with the AL East. As for the Mets, they've not only been good, but they've actually been able to maintain it all season to this point.

Truth be told I was half expecting the Mets to start falling off a little bit. They dropped the first two games of the series against the Padres coming out of the break, which gives me as a Mets fan a cause for concern. Not too much worry, but it comes with the territory as a Mets fan that the other shoe will drop at some point. But I have to say that there have been a lot of surprises with the Blue and Orange to this point. Starling Marte and Jeff McNeil have been playing fantastic ball to this point and have looked great in there roles with this ball club. Your getting clutch hitting from guys coming off the bench. Oh and Alonso has been hitting the cover off the baseball. Then the pitching has been pretty good too, and they doing it all without the ace of the staff in Jake deGrom.

The Bombers have been doing, well Bomber things this year. Judge and Stanton (Who it was revealed going to be taking time off for rest and a minor injury) have been hitting the tar out of the ball this season. Pitching has been good, with Nester Cortez coming out as a big surprise and pitching as well if not better at times than Garrett Cole.

This has been great baseball in New York and it keeps going with an exciting Subway Series kicking off tonight.

The End of An Era

Never thought I would actually see the day, or even really be talking about it for that matter. But it finally has happened. The man behind the greatest professional wrestling, or sports entertainment if you prefer, empire has finally called it a career. At the age of 77, Vince McMahon has finally retired from running the empire he created, World Wrestling Entertainment.

This all started in the early 80's when Vince took over for his father Vincent J McMahon./ He started his expansion to a national empire in 1983. Now, they sit here as the biggest promotion in the world. Vince had the fortitued to go out and buy up the smaller promotions and bring in all the big stars in the business and work for him. He took the business of professional wrestling to levels that it had never seen before.

Like any smart buisnessman, he adapted his business and his product with the times. He was putting out content with great, athletic stars, and being able to build new stars as he went along. He made guys that became household names in the mainstream media outlets outside of the wrestling business. He did things for the world of wrestling that sent the business into another stratosphere.

There have been bumps along the way, including that steroid aligations brought on him in 1993. He beat that. Now, which I think was a big reason why Vince retired, was sexual misconduct alligations and hush money paid out. TGhis turned out to be a very bad look for Vince and a very big reason why he retired.

Honestly it about time Vince retired. There's no word yet on how much power as far as creative goes for WWE  that Vince has actually given up yet, but it looks like it could be a good thing. As a fan of the product, WWE TV hasn't been as good the last few years and its been harder to watch with Vince at the helm. Now with him finally stepping aside, it could allow the product on TV to return to what it once was. A great wrestling product that put on higher quality matches and better storylines then what have been produced the last few years.

Vince Ias much as it feels weird seeing you finally retire, its about time and I hope for the better of WWE.

Big Paydays Incoming

There's big things coming in and around Major League Baseball in the coming days and coming months. Two of its biggest young stars, Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, could be moving teams and could be getting very big paydays. A lot of this talk has been coming over the last few days with coming off the all star game and with Soto turning down a large possible contract extension from the Nationals.

Judge turned down an offer from the Yankees during spring training. It was a seven year contract extension that was worth $30.5 million a year. Which equates out to about $200 million over the length of the deal. He signed on for $19 million given during arbitration. He's currently having a monster year. As for Juan Soto, he just turned down a monster offer from the Washington Nationals. The offer was reported at 15 years and worth $440 million, which is an eye popping number.

What does this tell me? It tells me both guys are aiming to become $500 million players.

Can they get it? Where can they get it?

Gut tells me Judge might have a better shot at it than Soto, and this is no slight at all against Soto who's one of the brightest young stars in the game today. When he's healthy Judge is one of the very best power hitters in baseball and has a chance to really put himself in another level. He can hit and hit with power. Soto is a good power hitter two, but to me he's a little more of a well rounded hitter than Judge.

Now can both players get that kind of money? Its not out of the relm of possibilities the way baseball salaries have been going the last number of years. We've seen Harper, Trout and Machado get huge deals over the last few seasons, so I wouldn't put it past owners to hand out that kind of cash. Either one of the New York teams could be a landing spot. Boston and LA as well. The teams that have been known as of late to shell out a ton of cash for players.

But what worries me about this is what its going to do for the rest of the team. Don't get me wrong, both Judge and Soto are going to be worth whatever money they get, no debate there. But what worries me is that a team is going to put all its eggs in one basket with one player and not really be able to gather a more balanced lineup and pitching staff around them to be a really competitive team. Yes, I do realize that not every one of the 30 MLB teams will be that competitive of a team every year. But I'd like to be able to see teams be able to at least have a shot at it. I'd like to see something more resembling a salary cap to keep more of a balance in the game of baseball.

MLB All Star Rosters

The midsummer classic is right around the corner. The gathering of the best of the best from around Major League Baseball. The mid season exhibition to see which league has the top stars is taking place at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles on July 18th. With a week to go before the game, the rosters have been selected. Here's what it looks like the 92nd annual all star game.

American League:

National League:
Starters:
Catcher: Wilson Contreras Cubs (3rd selection)
1st Base: Paul Goldschmidt Cardinals (7th selection)
2nd Base: Jazz Chisholm Jr. Marlins (1st selection)
3rd Base: Manny Machado Padres (6th selection)
Shortstop: Trea Turner Dodgers (2nd selection)
Outfielders:  Ronald Acuña Jr. Braves (3rd selection), Mookie Betts Dodgers (6th selection), Joc Pederson Giants (2nd selection)
Designated Hitter: Bryce Harper Phillies (7th selection)

Reserves:
Catcher: William Contreras Braves (1st selection), Travis d'Arnaud Braves (1st selection)
1st Base: Pete Alonso Mets (2nd selection), C. J. Cron Rockies (1st selection)
2nd Base: Jeff McNeil Mets (2nd selection)
3rd Base: Nolan Arenado Cardinals (7th selection)
Shortstop: Dansby Swanson Braves (1st selection)
Outfielders: Ian Happ Cubs (1st selection), Starling Marte Mets (2nd selection), Kyle Schwarber Phillies (2nd selection), Juan Soto Nationals (2nd selection)

Sandy Alcántara Marlins (2nd selection), David Bednar Pirates (1st selection), Corbin Burnes Brewers (2nd selection), Luis Castillo Reds (2nd selection), Edwin Díaz Mets (2nd selection), Max Fried Braves (1st selection), Tony Gonsolin Dodgers (1st selection), Josh Hader Brewers (4th selection), Ryan Helsley Cardinals (1st selection), Clayton Kershaw Dodgers (9th selection), Joe Mantiply Diamondbacks (1st selection), Joe Musgrove Padres (1st selection)

So any surprises on being left off rosters?  Well with the AL I gout a couple. Ten wins for Logan Gilbert out in Seattle. Only guy in the AL who's got more wins than he does is already in the game, that being Justin Verlander who's at 11 wins. Gilbert has 100 K's and a 2.80 ERA how he isn't here is a surprise. Also worth nothing I think the only reason Anthony Rizzo was left out of the game was his .226 batting average. He's got better numbers then Arraez of the Twins. In the National League that Francisco Lindor was not selected. Sure Dansby has a little better average, but Lindor has better overall numbers than his Braves counterpart.
