Quarter of the Way Through season, Things Not Looking So Hot For Mets

The first quarter of the Major League Baseball season has passed and things are not looking all that great for my New York Mets. Currently the Mets sit in 4th place in the National league East with a record of 19-20 and are 6 games behind the Division Leading Phillies. The biggest bright spot for the team so far this season was the 8 game winning streak the team had to close out the month of April. One glaring problem the team has had has been strings of inconsistent play along with a slight case of the injury bug. As of the time of this writing, Carlos Beltran is still plagued with the knee injury, has no set timetable on his return to the lineup.

As far as the players are concerned, there have been strong showings form a few players, most notably Ike Davis and Rod Barajas. Barajas right now is hitting .273 but the suprise has been the 9 Home Runs. The reason this is a surprise is because the Mets have not really had any power whatsoever from the Catcher position since Mike Piazza left the team. Jason Bay leads the team with a .278 Batting Average but a suprise coming out of him is the fact that he only has 1 Home Run. I think he will eventually find his power stroke but who knows when that will happen.

Now on to 2 key components to this season, David Wright and Ike Davis. Davis has been a very nice suprise over at 1st base, a huge improvement over the rotation of sub par 1st baseman since the injury problems hit Carlos Delgado. Right now Davis is hitting .271 with 3 Home Runs and 10 RBI's. But the one thing that stands out about this guy is his defense. He has made at least 3 spectacular plays going over the rail by the Mets bench at Citi Field to make the play and they have all been highlight reel stuff. Expect this kid to take 1st Base for himself for a long time. Now as far as 3rd Base goes, David Wright has finally started to look like the David Wright of old that most Mets fans fell in love with. Currently Wright is hitting .270 with 8 Home Runs and 26 RBI's. As evidance by his stats the power has seemed to have come back to David in his swing. Hopefully this will keep up.

Heading into this season a big question mark for the club was going to be the pitching staff. No suprise that the team ace, Johan Santana is pitching like the ace. He has a 3-2 record in 8 starts with a 3.88 ERA and 40 K's. A surprise here is that Santana does not have the best record on the team, Mike Pelfrey does at 5-1. For the Mets to possibly make a run at the Division they need to get rid of Oliver Perez who as I have said before is a waste of space and walks everybody and their mother. Got the Yankees this weekend. Series Preview is to follow
