Oswego Women's Hockey Split Weekend Against St. Norbert

In the first two games of 2013, the Oswego State Women's Hockey team hit the ice at home, playing host to the Green Knights of St Norbert College. The opener of the weekend series took place Saturday night and saw Oswego State skate away with a 3-2 victory, despite some injury trouble late. Oswego got on the board first 2:20 into the hockey game when Captain Olivia Boersen connected for her 5th of the year. The Lakers then increased the lead to 2-0 when at the 19:32 mark of the period, Melissa Seamont scored her 5th goal of the year, and 2nd point of the period as she assisted on the earlier goal by Boersen. So Oswego had a 2-0 lead at the end of one period of play, despite being outshot in that opening period 11-5.

To the 2nd period we go and the only scoring in that period was by St. Norbert as at the 6:15 mark of the period Andrea Senne scored her 5th of the season. Oswego held the one goal lead at the end of the period, but this was by far the most penalty filled period of the night. Scary moment took place about halfway through the period as Oswego captain Olivia Boersen went crashing hard into the end boards and came up somewhat limping. But being the leader that she is, Boersen came back out for the 3rd period and finished the game. Oswego still held a 2-1 lead going into the final period.

The Lakers lead would not last however. At the 3:20 mark of the final period, Henriette Ostergaard scored her 4th of the year to tie the game at 2. Oswego would take the lead back for good at the 11:24 mark of the period, thanks to a powerplay goal from Megan Hagg, her 4th goal of the year.  Oswego's defense would tighten up and shut the door to hang on for the 3-2 win.

Bridget Smith picked up the win for Oswego, improving her record on the year to 6-3-1, making 18 saves. Kaley Gibson took the loss for St. Norbert, dropping her record to 3-5-2, as she also made 18 saves. St. Norbert went 0 for 3 on the powerplay while Oswego went 1 for 6 on their powerplays.

Game two of the weekend series was played on Sunday, and unfortunately for Oswego they were unable to sweep the series, as St. Norbert walked away with a 2-1 win and a split of the weekend. Andrea Senne scored the only goal of the first period, her 6th of the year, at the 12:15 mark to give the Green Knights a 1-0 lead. To the 2nd period we go and St. Norbert would extend their lead to 2-0 thanks to Isabell Lindstrom's 3rd of the year at the 9:39 mark of the period. Oswego would get on the board and cut the lead to 2-1 thanks to a powerplay goal from Leslie Jarvis, her 2nd of the year, at the 13:56 mark of the 2nd period.

But he Lakers weren't able to push another puck across the goal line the rest of the night and St. Norbert came away with the one goal victory. Tori Trovato took the loss for Oswego, dropping her record to 1-2-0, while she made 17 saves. Kaley Gibson got the win for St. Norbert, improving her record to 4-5-2, while she made 16 saves. St. Norbert went 0 for 4 on the powerplay, while Oswego went 1 for 5 with the man advantage.

After this weekends games, Oswego now sits at a 7-6-1 overall record and a 6-2-0 record in ECAC West play. Melissa Seamont still leads the team in scoring with 16 points and assists with 11. Seamont is tied with Olivia Boersen and Mady Paul for the team lead in goals with five. As for the goaltenders, Bridget Smith has carried the bulk of the work load starting ten games and compiling a 6-3-1 record with one shutout a 1>58 GAA and a .932 SV%. Tori Trovato has played 3 games and has a record of 1-2-0 with a 1.68 GAA and a .921 SV%

Next up for the Lakers is a weekend road trip to the north country and the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena in Plattsburgh NY to take on the Plattsburgh State Cardinals. Game one is Saturday January 12th and game two is Sunday January 13th, with puck drop for both games set for 3pm!
